Of course, the issue is complicated when both currencies are diluting their respective currencies. Which could be part of the reason that gold has increased so drastically while both currencies have not changed at as great an amount relative to each other.

The question is, how much of the increase in the price of gold is related to the value of currencies and how much is due to a possible bubble brought on by folks fleeing a percieved insecurity in monetary-based wealth? Got a few ounces myself - the present price has me reluctant to buy more (not that I can afford to anyway).

The other question is - when will the replacement for the 5D2 come out and how much will it cost?

At this perceived rate of inflation about 2 Gold Bars

2 gold bars? The 5D Mk. II costs 2 gold coins (1 oz gold costs $1260)... or yes, even 1oz bars, if you call "bar" something that is smaller than a hotel soap.

well, if the price of gold declines, and the dollar increase in strength, it would be safe to say that the price of the 5d III would have to go down; as gold is used in its construction, and it is manufactured in a foreign country that has it's own currency.

bubble:

that's inflation adjusted to £ in mid 2009, there is no way that this is anything aside from hedging (and major speculation). the price of gold has been inflated due to all kinds of things, especially the fear mongering going on on tv late night adds "BUY GOLD, THE WORLD WILL END" it looks like the 70-80's all over again. just draw a sharp line from the graph upward a couple hundred £ or so.

What did this thread tell you about 5D3 before we started discussing about gold?

It tells us that people who are vested into photography have deeper-than-average pockets most of the time, especially if they can justify a $2,500-3,000 camera body for a simple hobby. :p

deeper than average? you don't drive a $200 beater car to work do you? anything over that price is excess, but you justify it. if you can afford to spend $15,000 on a car when in reality all you need is a $50 bicycle, or $200 beater with a heater, than you can afford to spend half that on cameras on lenses (this is my philosophy, i've got my wife trained, so don't screw it up  )

No, I still drive my first car which I bought for 8,890USD in two separate checks and it's a '99 Honda Prelude. Most people upgrade their cars when they've grown up to realize that this car just doesn't represent them as a person.

That's when I know my thinking is going down the wrong path for reasons to invest further into an automobile.

It's not a better, but it is an eleven year old car. ;)

Oh, and on the whole 'it's a way of life', you're right. I've owned (in this order), 5D, 40D, 1D III, D700 (srs), 5D II and finally and presently, the 1Ds II.

I won't ever consider a 5D until they include a 100% VF coverage on one of their bodies and focusing on AF improvement outside the center points. It is a standard I have for all my camera bodies now. It may not be nearly as important to somebody else but it is a selling factor to me at least. I will admit that I much preferred the NR of the 5D II over the D700 across the range.

It still wasn't enough, but it could've been if the body had one almighty analog button added to the back of it.

Mirror Lock-up.

Why, out of curiosity, do you require 100% viewfinder?

Obviously any DSLR is going to seem tiny compared to a blad with respect to viewfinder size. especially the waist level finders.
