.......1-month or so after Nikon. If there's no update to D700s/n soon, this means Canon will wait for as much as they want, till Nikon announcement. ....

A D700 replacement has to near though.

No chance until Summer atleast.

I do believe the D700 replacement will come first. The 5D Mark II will be replaced shortly after.

i hope they step up their game with the 5dm3... or else I might honestly think about getting the d800. nikon has been doing awesome the last few years, with their world class lenses (70-200, 24-70,14-24, 24, 35, 105) pretty much blowing canon's out of the water except maybe the new 70-200. Their bodies are also what I want, which is awesome AF, awesome high ISO, awesome speed... granted theres no movie, but they are great picture cams. makes me jealous sometimes when my colleagues are flaunting around their D700s with 14-24, or insanely sharp 24-70s. canon, step it Up!!!

Im considering jumping as well. If the 5D3 doesnt have better autofocus, I will be buying the D700 or D800 when that comes out.

Ive been trolling the nikon forums, and it seems none of them expect a D800 soon. My gut feeling is the 5D mark III will be released before the D800.

Nikon took three years to bring out a Canon 5D variant and by then we had a 5DII. I can't see a D800 offering anything more to tempt current 5DII owners away from the Canon camp. It's more likely to be marketed at current D700 upgraders. The D700 cut's it's spec list differently to the 5DII but it's pretty much a 5D with a faster frame rate and better AF system. The 5DII offers a serous increase in resolution and image quality over botht he D700 and original 5D. The 5DII used the same design brief that the 5D used. But it's likely that the 5DIII will be a stightly different beast due to the rumoured demise of the 1Ds4. The 5DIII is likely to incorporate some of the 7D's more sports orientated brief. I'd be surprised if the 5DII replacement retains the current 4fps. I think 5-6 are far more likely, with an AF system that is based on the 7D and a further weather sealing improvement. I think we'll see another resolution increase, but probably not the 1.7x increase that we saw between the 5D anf 5DII...which is a good thing. I think the UI and handling will be a big improvement over the current model too.

where do you get this from about the nikon lenses blowing canon's out of the water?

the only ones nikon makes that canon has nothing to even come close is the 14-24mm and the 200-400 VR.

Didn't hear back from you, but if you can't get large prints out of 3200 ISO on the 7D then your not shooting right.

you know, the more I read this statement the more it bothers me... look at the picture you posted. there is light pouring into the room through what I assume to be a window. I think I can see a tint of blue in the reflection of the coffe pot... either way, it is a rectangular reflection...if its not a window, then its a softbox. also, the boy has three distinct catch lights in his eye. so, you had a window flooding the room with light as well as two lights in the room on (you can see the reflection in the coffe pot as well as the kids eyes). I was talking about actual low light photography... do me a favor, take the same shot at 9 pm with only 1 of the two lights in the house on.

I must admit... I was truely impressed with the D700!

all the rumors I have been reading say that the d800 will be released the first quarter of this year and the new 5d won't be out until the last of this year...

I don't think they were talking about mere focal ranges... I think they were refering to image quality and sharpness. At least thats what struck me about spending a day shooting with nikon body and glass.

And a substantial price hike too?

If it's going to replace both the 5D2 and the 1Ds3, they may perhaps decide to call it a "1" of some sort and price it accordingly - not to the astronomical 1Ds level, but possibly substantially more than 5D2 levels. I think they'd be foolish to do so mind. And they have to be aware of what Nikon will do. The 5D2 is deficient in AF, the D700 in resolution - a lot depends on which company decides it has to move first. But although the 5D2 is ultimately capable of better results than the D700 they're a lot harder (and more unpredictable) to achieve, and I think Canon's need to progress is greater than Nikon's. I've never understood why Canon didn't put a much better AF system into the 5D2 - looking at the timing of development of that camera, the 7D and the 1D4, I would have thought they could have done a bit of last-minute switching of components, given the vastly better system that Nikon had introduced in the D700. IMO Canon really took their eyes off the ball, which is why I've stuck with my 5Dc and haven't been tempted by the 5D2. Unless Canon are bent on corporate suicide though (and that I rather doubt) I'm pretty sure I'll be motivated to get the 5D3.

Nikons 24-70 blows canons away
nikons 16-35 blows canon's 2.8 version away (sharper and has VR)
nikons new 35 is sharper than canons 35L
nikons 105mm macro slightly edges canons 100L
nikons 24mm is sharper than our 24L II
I believe canons 70-200 2.8 II is about the same as nikons, which is also amazing.

100% crops on the d700's with 24-70/70-200 look RAZOR sharp. granted they are only 12MP, but even their D3X's look amazing at 100%.

I would... but I'm waiting. plus I don't want to have the same stuff as my colleagues ;) Maybe the grass is always greener, but in this case, the grass might actually be greener.
I am hoping that canon steps it up with all their new releases. If the new 70-200 is a sign of things to come, I'll be patiently waiting.

oh, another lens to add to the beatdown, nikons new 85 1.4 is probably sharper than our 1.2 version. hah.

Idk. I don't care for which one brand is better. They both make great products.
