Alright, so I was happily shooting for my friend's gathering in the afternoon no problem with my 1D2N. Then just 15min before a school shoot (a band's passing out parade) my 1D2N decided to 'die'. There was this bright band in the photos and at the same spot for every photo like so:

IMAGE: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2692/4334731080_bee7163319_o.jpg

I knew it probably was a shutter problem. I kept the 1D2N, called my friend to bring a backup for me, and put my bag down. 10 min later I opened up my camera and the focusing screen area seemed to be loose. The focusing screen could just pop down. I was shocked.

Now I guess all cameras fail some way, some time, but I wasn't expecting my secondhand 1D2N to fail within 3months of my purchase. It's going back to Canon Service Center SG on Monday. Hope to get it back before the Lunar New Year.

Ugh.

Definitely a broken shutter :( Sorry to hear. Hope it comes back good as new and quickly from the Service Centre. I'd have them attend to the focusing screen issue too, just ask them for a general clean-up and everything.

Just look at it this way...when you get it back all fixed, it'll be just about like new! Make sure they do a good cleaning and get you a good, accurate shutter count. My shutter count (with 1DCount) shows about 197K on it, so I'm waiting for the same thing to happen to mine. I'm sorry to hear about yours failing though! Good luck with repairs!

Why would a broken shutter make the focus screen drop down? I have not had a shutter fail yet, but this does not look like any of the imgaes I have seen of one that did. If the focus screen dropped, maybe the mirror didn't flip all the way up, and that's what caused the bright line.

Have you tried re-clipping the focus screen back up?

That looks pretty much like every shutter failure pic that I've seen. Similar to what mine looked like right before shutter replacement.

And I think it's pure bad coincidence about the loose focus screen bracket, but highly doubt one has anything to do with the other.

With any luck, I'll never see it first hand.
