Is there a recommended QR plate for the Sigma 120-300 (newer collar version)? If not, what does everyone use to secure a QR plate to it eliminating rotation of the lens on plate? (I'm using a Gitzo head)

I just used regular wimberley/rrs kind of plate that I had for my 70-200mm f2.8. It wasa bit short but worked fine for use on monopod.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking what type of a plate will prevent the rotation of the foot of the tripod ring around the tripod screw.

I have not had a problem with rotation of any of my three lenses which have tripod rings (70-200mm f/4L IS, 300mm f/4L IS and 400mm f/5.6L).

I attach these lenses to standard plates made by RRS and by Giottos (I use a Giottos MH-657 QR System).

I use a RRS L-Plate when attaching a non-tripod ring equipped camera/lens to the QR clamp. This prevents the torque of the camera around the tripod screw.

However, KIRK markets an Arca Compatible lens plate for the 120-300mm f/2.8 Sigma. This incorporates a flange which is designed to prevent the lens from rotating around the attaching screw.

If you don't use an Arca Compatible quick release system on your Gitzo head, you should. Kirk has a conversion system which you could use: http://www.kirkphoto.com …Quick-Release-Clamps.html (external link)

Thanks for the info. From the look of the Kirk plate it seems to be designed for the first version of the 120-300 handle. I'll shoot them an email to verify.
