I've just loaded CS3 on a new computer running 64 bit Win 7. Everything works great exept for the update manager.

The steps I've made so far include manually downloading and installing the latest software updates for PS and Bridge. I've also shut down my firewall and have PS run as admin with no luck.

I'm getting the following dialog (Note: my internet is working fine ... which is how I got the manual updates :) ):

If you already have the updates, why bother?

Quite odd, only thing I could think about is firewalls, perhaps the windows firewall still ran in the background, or your AV has a similar function enabled.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I'd prefer being able to check for updates and install them from the product instead of having to mess around on the Adobe site.

It's not a biggie, but it is weird. And I've verified that only McAfee firewall is running and the problem still exists when I turn the firewall off.

Odd... but you're running CS3. Not really like there are any software updates for it anymore.

That's true enough. I think you have me convinced not to worry about it. :D

I think that there's an automatic check for updates function I'll need to turn off to avoid "automatically" getting the error message.

I've disabled that a long time ago... Not like I need every little new tweak anyway. And less programs running = happy computer :D

Update to this thread that may be of interest to Windows 7 users:

What causes the issue with Adobe Updater (for all Adobe products, not just CSx) is a conflict with Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. If you disable the adapter in Device Manager Adobe Updater works fine.
