The 50D is a tremendous camera - esp as an upgrade from the 400D or Rebel range.

I keep being amazed by it.

I wouldn't wait (unless you know for certain that Canon will release a 60D imminently) as no matter when you buy there will be new technology just around the corner.

I bought the 50D and a week later the 7D came out - was I disappointed? Nope, I got all the camera I need at the moment!

I would wait. Yes only the T2i was just announced, but that doesn't mean the 60D won't be announced in a month or more. Last year the T1i was announced on March 29th.

I want to move away from the Rebel range of cameras, not that I have anything against them

The T2i looks very impressive for a Rebel- not saying you should buy one but the 60d will be even better, which will really kick 50d ass (especially at it's current price on brand new models)

400dabuser - once you get used to shooting a XXD, you will not want to buy a XXXD camera again.

Figure out what you want/need from a new body and decide from there. I decided the ergonomics alone were enough to make the jump (but there is the frame rate, high ISO etc as well)

The XXXD cameras will always be smaller, have harder to access controls (for ISO, WB, Metering mode, etc), have only one wheel (which makes it harder to adjust settings), the viewfinder looks so dark by comparison and so on.

The only issue if I were you is when and that has to be your call.

1) Buy a previous model (40D) and save some money (still a tremendous camera)
2) Buy the current model (50D) and enjoy the best Canon offering (in the price range) atm.
3) Wait for the next one (60D) and put up with the shortcomings of the 400D you have at the moment.

very true. This is why I'm "replacing" my XTi with the old dinosaur 20d. The XTi has some newer features then the 20d and just as good (or possibly better?) IQ. I love the XTi but I love the controls on the 30d even more, and I wanted a matching xxD body.

Had a touchy feel of the 50D, and I enjoy the ISO range, but not quite sure about the ergonomic, perhaps it is me being used to the 400D plus the battery grip

I had a gripped 400D before as well and I am loving the feel of the 50D now. It did feel unusual to begin with though ( I thought I had dropped the grip somewhere )

Does the 50D have multi-spot metering, or is it a single spot metering?

You can set the 50D to use any one of the 9 spots.
I use the center one.

:)

60D? What is this 60D you speak of?

Heheh, I just love the way people are convinced that there is definitely going to be a 60D; at the moment, I'm having trouble seeing how they intend to slot it in between the 550D and the 7D spec wise... If it's lesser than the 7D in many repsects, then, if I were the OP, I'd go for the 50D now.
