Hi all. The improving weather has encouraged me to go out and get practising with my MP-E65. Yesterday I spent a good couple of hours probing the bark of my apple tree and some surrounding soil and found several things I've never seen before, aside from the usual springtails I'm getting familiar with. Here are a few of my best - if anyone can suggest identification of any I'd be very grateful.

On the apple tree I found this grub, about 10mm long.

On the soil I found this transparent worm, about 20mm long.

While watching this "large" springtail, I saw the tiny yellow one above. I think this is an early instar of one of the globular ones.

In the soil near my compost bin, I found this peculiar thing, looking superficially like a silverfish and moving quite rapidly. On close inspection it looks like it's equipped for a predatory life. I've no idea if it's a larva of a beetle or something, or if it's an adult of something completely different. The eyes look primitive.

Finally, having come indoors, my wife asked me to have a look at some tiny things that were floating in the water bowl within one of her tarantula tanks. They look like springtails and, as this was shot at 4X on a 40D, you can see they must be less than 1mm long. The darker ones that have eyes are only half that. Over on the right there's some sort of mite too.

larger elongated springtail should be an Isotomurus but not sure which one.White ones look like folsomia candida which I have not photographed but i'm probably wrong, not sure if they are swimmers.
Number 4 is very interesting, maybe a beetle larva?

Great Shots. #4 is a rove beetle larva (family Staphylinidae) not sure of the species though

indeed Folsomia candida!

The smaller greyish specimens are probably Proisotoma minuta.

Kind regards,

Frans
