Canon's new video features on the 550D are huge for people who shoot motion (cinematographers, etc.). It used to cost $2700 to get a DSLR with 1080p30 (5D2). Then the 7D came along for $1700 and added 1080p24 and 720p60. Now that is available in the 550D for just $800, a huge improvement in value. On top of that, they added a standard definition video crop mode that will be great for focal-length-limited situations like wildlife videography, and even avoids the aliasing artifacts of the normal line-skipping mode.
The reason the 5d2 was so groundbreaing is that it offers a 35mm sensor for 1/4 the price of dedicated pro cams. To get the benefits, you need to add a $2000 rig from zacuto or some other outfit. Yeah the rebel is $1500 cheaper, but it does not have a FF sensor and it smacks of being "too cheap". Cruise cinema5d and some of the other sites, and the 7d is not getting the same kind of praise that the 5d2 gets - the only thing it has of the 5 is the larger selectin of formats. Also, at this point we've been "at the movies" for a couple of years with DSLRS - making the "taking you to the movies" tag line pretty lame.
If a new cam with AF or "designed for movie" lenses came out that would be different
