Am I the only one thoroughly underwhelmed with the "big announcements" in london today? We've been hearing about 2 bodies and several lenses - and we got a rebel and some POS P&S's.

I can't imagine the reason for another announcement tomorrow (vs. just announcing all at once), but I have an "is that all" feeling from this london event. Where's the hoopla on "canon at the movies" - I can't imagine even the marketing morons thinking anyone is going to shoot more than home movies with a rebel.

Look at it from Canons point of view. This launch is probably more critical to the future success of the company than the 1D4.

Point & Shoots and entry level dSLR's are the real marketplace.

true they are definitely a much larger market, but their margins are likely lower as well. I still don't understand exactly how "canon took us to the movies" on this one, but I didn't see the actual presentation or announcements. Did I miss a new whiz-bang video camera, or are they just excited that the new P&S's can do HD video?

It's especially disappointing since the rumor mill predicted the new 70-200/2.8IS and also made mention of a 24-70 with IS - which is what I am really looking forward to. I guess the one that came true gave credence to the one I wanted, which is where I went wrong.

You do know that they did announce a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II a few weeks ago, right?

Canon's new video features on the 550D are huge for people who shoot motion (cinematographers, etc.). It used to cost $2700 to get a DSLR with 1080p30 (5D2). Then the 7D came along for $1700 and added 1080p24 and 720p60. Now that is available in the 550D for just $800, a huge improvement in value. On top of that, they added a standard definition video crop mode that will be great for focal-length-limited situations like wildlife videography, and even avoids the aliasing artifacts of the normal line-skipping mode.

The reason the 5d2 was so groundbreaing is that it offers a 35mm sensor for 1/4 the price of dedicated pro cams. To get the benefits, you need to add a $2000 rig from zacuto or some other outfit. Yeah the rebel is $1500 cheaper, but it does not have a FF sensor and it smacks of being "too cheap". Cruise cinema5d and some of the other sites, and the 7d is not getting the same kind of praise that the 5d2 gets - the only thing it has of the 5 is the larger selectin of formats. Also, at this point we've been "at the movies" for a couple of years with DSLRS - making the "taking you to the movies" tag line pretty lame.

If a new cam with AF or "designed for movie" lenses came out that would be different

They've been there, done that. It's all trickle down to the cheap consumer market at this point, where there are better options. An HD videocam with actual AF is more likely to be used successfully by the consumer crowd than a camera you have to manually focus off of an LCD.

The original "invitation" was tagged as "canon will take you to the movies". Which, it turns out, means that a new rebel with 1080p and some P&S's with 720p video were announced.

No 60d, no new lenses

Thanks.
That is of no interest to me so I guess I didn't miss anything.

Well, out to the movies is a cheap date. Perhaps they'll take us out to dinner for the 60D

There was also this announcement:

http://www.dpreview.com …anoneose1videoplug-in.asp (external link)

Which for professional videographers and editors using FCP and Canon cameras is a reasonably big deal.

On a different note, am I the only one who thinks a camera with an exclusive touchscreen interface is a terrible idea?

There's just no pocket cam out there that makes me want to upgrade from my SD880IS.
