ok, the T2i is a pretty big deal for people like me. i want the ability to swap lenses, take nice pictures, and HD video. i has many of the manual video controls of the 7D including exposure control and the ability to choose your framerate. this is a big deal for people that dont want to spend 1700 on a 7D but want the video as well. im sure its not the greatest preformer in either catagory, but i fits a lot of peoples needs that dont want to buy both a dedicated camcorder and a DSLR.

ALSO HAS EXTERNAL MICROPHONE INPUT!!!!!!!!

Also, at this point we've been "at the movies" for a couple of years with DSLRS - making the "taking you to the movies" tag line pretty lame.

I don't even notice stuff like this. I've been burned so much in the past that my expectations of any marketing department are very low. If McDonalds promises me an "all beef patty", based on their past performance I would expect that to mean "100% hair, intestine, and liver". If it had 10% of actual meat, I would be pleasantly surprised. Same thing with Canon. If they promise that the next camera will be ten million times better than the last, I expect that to mean it will be about 1% better. If it turns out to actually be 2% better than the last, I am pleasantly surprised.

Maybe you still think there is some sort of expectation for marketing to have some sort of resemblance to reality? Personally, I would be shocked and horrified if Marketing ever started to be honest and direct. It would turn my world upside down. Exaggerations, misdirection, and lies are just business as usual for Marketing. Nothing to be surprised about.

To get the benefits, you need to add a $2000 rig from zacuto or some other outfit.

Well, the type of people who are excited about reducing the video camera from $2500 to $800 are often the same type who can't afford the $2000 zacuto rigs. They do without or DIY for one tenth the cost.

it does not have a FF sensor

No, but it still provides plenty of value. After all, Super35 is APS-C. And for many, APS-C 1080p24 for $800 is a huge value compared to FF for $2500.

and it smacks of being "too cheap".

"Too cheap"!? I don't know the meaning of them horrible words.

Cruise cinema5d and some of the other sites, and the 7d is not getting the same kind of praise that the 5d2 gets

For good reason. It did not provide value commensurate with its price, whereas the 550D does.

They've been there, done that. It's all trickle down to the cheap consumer market at this point, where there are better options. An HD videocam with actual AF is more likely to be used successfully by the consumer crowd than a camera you have to manually focus off of an LCD.

I don't disagree.

I do understand where you're coming from, but I also have had some time shooting video with the 7d. I can tell you from personal experience that it is much more difficult to manually focus off the LCD than it is looking through a viewfinder (with focusing aids). I ended up buying the hoodloupe to try to improve my results, and while it was better it is not as good as I'd hoped. I don't know if the zacuto is any better, but I am not sure it is really worth investing more. Saturday I was second shooter so had the opportunity to shoot the first dance with my 7d and a borrowed 85/1.8. The reason I went with the 85 is that my light isn't very strong, so had to shoot ISO 4000 at f/2 or thereabouts. Anyway, it took me all of 5 seconds to realize that the 85's focus ring was really not designed for the subtle movements necessary for a swaying couple. Even the slightest twist would cause an overcorrection. Granted, my 70-200 seems to be a better fit but after shooting small video clips over 3 weddings I am really not getting the results I want. Sure it is probably me, but it is also the fact that video on a DSLR is a shoehorned feature that really will require a rework of the whole scheme. To do it right, you really do need a whole rig and a lot of practice.

At this point I am thinking about selling one of my DSLR's and getting an actual video cam.

I'v weaned myself from the "waiting for the other shoe to drop" syndrome by not upgrading a body type (P&S, 1.6 crop and FF) for at least 5 years. In this way, many shoes will have dropped in the 5 year period and my new camera body will be vastly better that the older body. I'll feel like I got my money's worth both in the use I made of the older body and the many advanced features of the new body. A win-win situation.

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

I think the T2i will be well received by the film community, especially those who either don't want or can't afford the large sensor of the 5D II. It's likely equal to the 7D in terms of video performance but at half the cost.
