Some will say only one lens with fixed focal lenght is the best but I do not agree. I'd get the kit lens to start, I think it's a better option. Oh and no need to start with the big racing cars if you don't know how to drive them. A 50mm F1.8 would be plenty enought. For a little over the price of your 50mm 1.4, you could get the 18-55, the 50mm 1.8 + the 55-250 which is the perfect starter kit. That would be a better option than only your 50mm F1.4 IMO.

Oh ok then ;) But as of me, the idea of getting the 18-55 , 50 1.8 and 55-250 instead of simplu the 50mm F1.4 is still better. But from what I'm reading, you seems to qyute know what you are doing.

Even better! Once you start shooting video at f/1.4 its addictive! That is the one thing I miss most about the 50 1.4. Its quite hard to keep focus on moving targets but the shallow DOF looks nice. If your committed on a T2i and 50 1.4 by all means go for it! Shoot, shoot, shoot and add glass when you feel the need for wider or longer.

That's a nice inexpensive prime lens. You'll get great shots.
It's tack sharp, and super fast, and you'll be able to get great shallow DOF with it wide open, or slightly stopped down.

I got the T2i body only, and the EF 50mm II f/1.8 (the nifty fifty) as my starter kit, and upgraded as I learned more.

You'll want to add a zoom at some point, and that's where your decisions begin to become much more difficult.

Enjoy!

The T2i is a great camera.

Hello Guys and Girls!

First i would like to say it’s great to see such passion spoken on the forum and reading back its just advice after advice, no clowns just everyone sharing a passion that has no become the same as mine!

This is my first active action on any form of photography forum. So here goes.

After reading back I see lot of my questions answered, so I suppose I want a reply to what I will ask.

The camera I have fallen for is the 550d. Yes I am new and will be my first DSLR, but this is the camera i want to learn from and make mistakes with. I've got a lot of negative comments from family and friends about my choice of camera but they just don’t understand my passion. They will say go and get a basic SLR and play with that but I do want something that I’ll be happy with and this will be future proof for me for many years to come.

I will be using the video recording a lot so this has a decent bit of kit for that, but of course it’s going to be taking pictures of my children, football/soccer games, random landscape and anything odd! Ha!

The price is now as little as £632 with the kit lens! Cheap OR what!!!

I like the sound of the 55-250mm to add on and also wanting a decent inexpensive lens for portraits and headshots any advice? The canon luxury rage look fab but of course I don’t need a lens of that ability just yet. :-P

Sorry if i have bored you :)

Yeah, this forum is great. You cant go wrong with the T2i for a beginner. I got mine a few weeks ago and Im having a blast.

People think Im crazy too spending $2000+ on my camera the first month Ive had it, but I just tell them its what I like to do.

I have a 55-250 and its great for all sorts of stuff.

Welcome FearlessV, First off you already have a great attitude for photography, yoo will make mistakes but that's how yoo learn what works and what doesn't in photography. At times you will be amazed at what you captured with the T2i/550D so I don't doubt this camera will be in your possession for quite a few years.

The T2i's robust HD video capability is the main reason I bought this camera but after seeing what it can do with still photos I have become passionate about stills as well and have even gotten better as a photographer. Once yoo have taken photos that yoo would like to post yoo can do so at this thread - https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=847939

For portraits I would go for the Nifty fifty - http://www.amazon.com …Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU (external link) It's inexpensive and gets great results easily.

50mm 1.8 is a must for you guys. If you are indeed loving photography. It's $90 you will not regret spending.

This could make your decision making a little bit easier ;]

Canon has won three major product awards in the prestigious annual awards judged by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA). The Canon EOS 7D has won the accolade of 'European Advanced SLR Camera 2010-2011'; the Canon EOS 550D has been awarded 'European Camera 2010-2011'; and the Canon LEGRIA HF M31 has been named as the 'European Family Camcorder 2010-2011'.

Another vote for newbies to DSLR's to get the EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

It's some of the best bang for your buck you could possibly get.

if you guys shoot food or macro or portraits, and want to spend more $$ on what I consider one of the top 2 or 3 efs lenses, 60mm 2.8 macro is fantastic.
