I'm trying to decide whether to buy the 550D. I take a fair number of pictures in dim light in places that don't allow flash and am worried that I'll have problems focusing.

Odd that the 50/1.8 is bad in dim light and other lenses (such as the 18-55 or 55-250?) do better. Usually a 1.8 would focus a lot faster than a 3.5-5.6 or a 4-5.6.

By the way, this is one of the most helpful threads I've seen on any topic on any photography forum. Informative, polite and on topic is a very rare combination.

I sometimes shoot in clubs with 550D and 7D and even though the 7D is unquestionably a better camera i don't see such a huge difference in how they focus in low light. I usually keep my flash on the body even if I don't use it (PW to trigger external flashes) so that it helps out with the AF beam and with the 24-105 f/4 the camera usually does not struggle to focus. 85 f/1.2 or 50 f/1.4 are a different story but I attribute most of the OOF shot to the shallow DOF since people are moving around a bit and even a resonably high ISO will not let you shoot faster than ~1/50s.

While on the subject - anyone noticed that the AF assist beam on the 430EX II in combination with the 550D sometimes just won't fire? I have yet to figure out under what circumstances that happens...

The lens would be wide open when focusing, only closing down to the set aperture when shooting. A 1.8 lens can close down to 5.6, but a 5.6 lens can't open to 1.8.

A 1.8 lens will provide the AF sensor a lot more light to use to focus than a 5.6 lens. Therefore, the 1.8 lens should AF better and faster, all things being equal.

When shooting, a 5.6 aperture will provide more DOF, so it will be more forgiving of focus mistakes.

Makes sense, with respect to being wide open during focus. The last sentence was the point I was trying to make (1.8 will have less focus error tolerance due to DoF). I guess if it thinks it got focus though, the camera may then stop down the 1.8 and overcome the focus error with a deeper DoF. Hmm. So would that mean bigger aperture would always focus better?

It's an addictive hobby. Early this year I didn't even know what SLR meant, and then my brother-in -law lent me one with a nice lens. It's been no looking back! I"ve had a great time and learned a ton, but have also spent a ton on cameras and lenses:D:oops:
Last night I pulled the trigger on a new $900 lens I really shouldn't be buying, although I must admit I don't really feel bad about it. I've got about 25k pictures on the hard drive, and have no idea how many I've deleted.

Are all your pics on flickr taken on 550D I'm wanting to buy one soon my first slr

From the address listed in my signature below, yes. I have 2 other flickr accounts, and on those I have some others with the old Sony Alpha my brother-in-law lent me.

has anyone installed magic lantern on their t2i yet?

Bump on this. I'm interested in the intervalometer and the boost to 25,600 ISO. Besides those things, it looks like most of the changes are video-related.

Funny how they say it's stable enough to release but "THIS IS DANGEROUS PRE-ALPHA SOFTWARE". I can see wanting to cover your butt, but is it solid or not?

I prefer the 16GB Patriot LX Series Class 10 SDHC cards. I have (2) of these and they have never failed me during video shoots (what I do mostly)

They are usually less expensive too.

I have never cleaned mine with anything! I recommend a Hoya UV filter for the lens so you won't have to clean that either. As for the card, that's what I use and I am very happy with it.
All round good lens!! There are thousands of pages here of people debating that topic. A couple of good ones were recommended above, but if you haven't that much cash, I would recommend either the Tamron or the Sigma version of the 17-50mm. About half the price of the Canon 17-55 and still very good. Frankly, though, most lenses are pretty good in spite of all the talk. If yours came with the 18-55, give it a chance. It's no slouch even if it isn't top-tier.

speaking of lens' I have a Canon 28-105 which I bought second hand when I got my camera - overall I'm quite happy with it, but really would like to know what the advantage of the 24-105 L lens would be.

I could use the extra 4mm of wide lens on occasion and am not sure if buying such an expensive lens is worth it. I'd like it, but would rather save my money to get the sigma 70-200 f2.8

I'm looking for harsh criticism of my photos - tell me how to improve, I will be grateful.
