No, it's not. The 550D uses the Digic 4 processor, not the Digic III. But that doesn't matter, if the buffer memory isn't large enough.

The T1i uses the Digic IV processor as well.

And I agree it's the buffer.

So basically, what happens is - they add 3 MP but kept the buffer memory as is?

Something like that.

Same processor and buffer, bigger files coming in faster and some of the algorithms are not simply linear. With a high ISO camera there is work in putting out good JPEGs. It seems like the T1i's 3.4 fps 15MP was just about right, giving such a long 170 JPEG buffer. Somehow 3.7fps 18MP really filled up a buffer big time, dropping it to 34 burst. It doesn't seem like much but while 15MP means the buffer can basically go all day, the larger files mean it gets filled pretty quick. That extra 3MP just keeps adding up, making the JPEG conversions, noise reduction, lighting optimization, etc. add up and after 34 frames the buffer is full when it normally wouldn't have filled for another 136 shots.

That's not even taking into account the low RAW numbers. From DP Review:

T2i:

Continuous: 3.7 fps up to 34 Large/Fine JPEG / 6 RAW frames

T1i:

Continuous: 3.4 fps up to 170 JPEG / 9 RAW frames

So the FPS has gone up just slightly, but there's a loss of 136 JPEG / 3 RAW images because all that data is still being pushed down the same buffer pipelines.

Why wouldn't they upgrade the buffer capability? That's a pretty large dropoff. Depending on how big the ISO/IQ differences are, I may just stick to my plan of getting a reduced price T1i instead of a T2i. It's my first DSLR anyways, so I'll still be into a great camera either way.

The chance of a firmware to increase buffer rates are slim (T1i still hasn't gotten one so I wouldn't expect one) and it may not be a viable option anyway (may be a hardware issue).

Tough choice that, in my opinion, relies solely on the image quality the T2i is capable in comparison to the T1i. 1080p video is nice, but not why I signed up to these forums, that's for sure.

It seems to me that some of you have it backwards.

I thought the XXD line is always released first, and then the Rebel counterpart (same mp and processor) follows suit.

Wasn't it the 50D released, then the T1i, and then the 7D and then the T2i?

Or something like that.

I wonder a different thought: Does the autofocus work as you zoom while filming video, or does it go blurry during zoom and then refocus?

Thank you. bw!

The T2i isn't a mini 7D, it is a mini unreleased 60D. The xxxD line has never followed a xD line.

Heum...

best entry video dslr?

what's the point of getting a 7D when this baby now get 720p 60fps and 1080 24fps and 30fps?

I'll get it only for the video mode this summer I guess and as a nice photo backup...

Well... besides amazing high speed shooting performance on a 1.6 crop that was only found on 1.3 1D series cameras before... =)

Yes, for video this is the bomb =)

Wish it wasn't so difficult to find a release date/sale date for stateside buyers (Rebel T2i). Does anyone have any info on that?

Er, better build quality, better ergonomics, more fps, much better AF, better weather sealing, wireless flash control - yeah, what's the point?

Not to mention that none of the Rebel series have ever had a pc sync port (to the best of my knowledge) for studio lighting which is what I use most.... of course I also use a Pocket Wizard which can be used on the T2i to get around no sync port.

Do I need better build quality? No
Better ergonomics? Not really
More fps? No
Much Better Af? No
Bettwe weather sealing? No
Wireless flash control? No

So what's the point?

Anyways, I'm gonna use it for the video.
They're both 1.6 crop caméra, I'd like to see the difference in the image quality if there is?
