I'd say it wasn't worth it. Your photos won't look much different. Invest the money in lenses, tripods and filters instead if you do a lot of landscape photography.

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the help/response.
Yes i think it will do the job for years to come. Was tempted by the high IQ of the high iso in the 550d.
Need some more thinking i guess

That's my question... Generic vs. Genuine.

I'd like to know this as well. Has anyone compared both?

I just ordered a generic one off Amazon. Will report once I've used it for a while. I'm not concerned with its being generic as long as it's well made. It's a simple electronic appliance, unlike the camera itself.

my mate has a t2i with an original battery grip, i tell you now theres pretty much no difference :| inc. the am batteries that came with it. i received my grip on the 15th of june, charged the batteries and they are still in the grip havent charged them since :) have taken a fair few shots too and still appears to be "full". Also doesnt feel different to the original, pretty much weighs same, same size and feel.

im extremely happy with the grip and so are many others in this thread. I think the only thing that will put me down in time with the grip is the actual rubber gripping placed, doesnt seem as good as the original but we shall see in time :)

if you havent seen this its worth a read and watch, also look at the pictures am grip vs original side by side.

he's reviewing the phottix am grip, i picked mine up from linkdelight which is a meike grip. came in the same box as the phottix so i assume its made in the same factory as well. linkdelight have a deal grip + 2 batteries + wired remote, which is cheap!

One on am batteries for those interested.

Not on its own, you need either a wireless trigger or the Canon ST-E2 commander. There are plenty of threads around here that discuss this in detail.

Just got my after market grip in the mail today and have to agree with everyone else. It really makes the camera feel much better in my hands, makes the 550d look like a high end model, and the build quality is great. Other than having the small Canon name sticker on the grip, no one would ever know you spent $100 less on this product.

High ISO example from a T2i:

At ISO 2500 using the Auto ISO function. Resized and standard sharpening from Thumbs Plus. Standard camera noise reduction settings in the camera. No post-production noise reduction.

T2i is a very feature-packed camera especially considering it's part of the Rebel series. High-resolution LCD that's even better than current prosumer bodies (5Dii/50D), high ISO capability similar to the 7D, as well as being able to shoot video at 60fps (720p), resulting in smooth slow-motion captures in post processing videos.

Great camera, especially for the price. which is why it's pretty hard to find any store that has it in stock :)

Upgraded to the 550D/T2i a couple weeks ago. Bought the kit with the 18-55 lens so I could give my 450D to my daughter (who is studying photography and photoshop at school). I can't say I've made much use yet of the better ISO, and the NR doesn't seem that much better shooting RAW than the 450D. However the 18 megapixels give you a lot more freedom to crop to your heart's content, and Photoshop (CS5 at least) seems to be able to pull more out of an image.

In retrospect would I have been better off spending the $850 on a lens than on the camera... I'm not sure. Check in with me in a couple months when I'm more comfortable with it :D
