Canon 500D / 250D Close-up lens question

Hello all,

I'm considering buying a close-up filter as an 'intro' to macro photography before dumping a lot of money on an actual macro lens...

So, what I'd like to do is buy one size filter that I can use on a couple of lenses with different filter diameters. So, I thought about getting a 77mm filter and a step-up/down ring. My question though, is if the step up/down ring might throw off the focus or magnification of the lens/filter combination?

Should work fine like that.
Think you can only get a 500D in that size. Max magnification would be about 0.6:1 with the 70-300mm at the 300mm setting. (mag = lens focal length/500).
You may find it better to think about a set of Kenko ext tubes.

Ya, I think extension tubes are a better investment. They will prove to be useful even later on (even for non macro applications)

Thanks, Brian & Will. I was actually looking into those after I posted this. The other advantage is if I buy the 3 tube kenko set, the wife & I can share.
