changing colour

i have recently found to chang colour in lab by inverting channel ie red to green then some smart alec sent this pic and said now make the white red.
Now obviously cant use same method as inverting would just make black.
Now can change colour useing hue /saturation but results arnt very good .
Is there a way in lab of doing a better job?
