Yep. Taken while The Beast was resting. Not sure if the VM numbers are normal or not. I don't have experience with the program, so this may be expected.

Yeah that looks really high like twice what mine is have you done a full shutdown and reboot and perhaps a permissions repair for what it's worth.

Todd,
Have you tried the "Repair Database" and "Rebuild Database" commands? In A2 it was "consistency check" and "rebuild library" I believe. This has speed up my A2 a fare amount when it was slowing down. To access the commands hold down on the option-command keys when starting Aperture. It will probably take quite a(long)while.
Norrie

THANK YOU! I did this and my library is finally working in A3. Here's the exact series I did for anyone who's having trouble. Perhaps it will help.

1. Performed the "repair database" and "rebuild database" on the 2.1.4 library.
2. Started A3 with a clean library with no images. I also turned off faces and changed the preview settings to the smallest values.
3. Imported the 2.1.4 library into the new library (this is probably the same step as reconverting but I'm not shure)
4. **Important step <---- Walk away from the computer and let it run for 12 hours. aka work
5. Upon coming back A3 locked up. I had to do a hard reboot and fired up A3 in 32 bit mode. Let A3 run the rest of the processes needed.

So far it's working. I hope its stable enough ;)

What is the proper way to bring my photos in from iPhoto? Import > Import from iPhoto. I select the iPhoto library. Should I select Store file in Aperture Library and move them if I'm making the switch over to Aperture completely? Is there a better way to do this? Can I keep them in the location, then move them over later easily?

I thought I'd finally give this a go and purchased it. However, Aperture 3 crashes when I try to import my iPhoto Library. Pffft. "Pro App".

*disappointed*

Ok A3 sure seems to have a lot of issues. I have only imported about 10 photos, but my 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro processor is working its ass off all the time and yet things go quite slow.

BUT: I have played some more with it and featurewise it is SOO GOOOD! I am just hoping now, that either LR3 will take a big leap forward OR that A3 will get all the issues sorted out.

Highlights:
- Every edit can be brushed in or brushed out. Example: Add some vignetting, - oops that corner gets too dark - no problem, just brush the vignetting in that corner away.
- Every edit can have several instances that can be ticked on/off.
Oh, and CA actually works (hello LR?)

I am surely going to watch this situation (and play some more with A3).

I figured out what the issue was. Aperture doesn't like 64-bit. It will crash guaranteed if I import my iphoto library while in 64-bit mode. If I switch to 32-bit, import goes fine.

Do a right click and get info on the application icon in your applications folder - then check the box to open the app in 32-bit.

On the Aperture icon in the applications folder, right click and select "get info". There should be a flag to run in 32-bit mode.

I am in the process of upgrading from A2 to A3 on 17" MBP. I had over 20 gb free hard disk space. I realize that is tight but by my read of the requirements I was ok. The install appears to have gone well however when I try to proceed to upgrading my library, I am told the "library volume has insufficient disk space". I cannot open the application. I am flummoxed! What do I do next. I thought about moving things off the hard drive, to provide more space, but how much? Can I move the library via the Finder, outside of the application? Will edits stay linked? First issue I have had with Aperture. Yikes!

UPDATE:
I spoke with Apple and they apologized as they are discovering that you need to have, at least temporarily, aprox 50% of the size of your library free for upgrading the library. In my case, I have a 160 gb library, so I need 80 gb free to upgrade. As I only have 21gb free, I am moving data to an external drive temporarily. I'll post conclusion... soon I hope!

Is anyone else having a problem with the loop?

I'm running a 15" MBP 2.2ghz Core2duo with 4GB of ram. And unlike Ap2, the 3.0 trial library I'm running with both an imported up-converted project from Ap2 and a set of fresh downloads to a new project in 3.0 runs fine in all aspects; except, I have to wait on the loop to render my images in the loop viewer circle. This is driving me batty!

I don't have this issue at all in Ap2 only in Ap3.

This loop slowness issue combined with all the horror stories in here from converting the Ap2 libraries has me worried about buying the full version of 3.

I have 4 separate Ap 2.1.4 libraries for a total of about 300+GB that would need conversion to 3.0 if I made the jump. But the loop slowness alone is painful. Move the loop tool wait for render, move the tool, and wait for render.

Also when I did the fresh import the loop use was fine for that one project, but after a reboot the loop was just as slow in that project as the other two previous imported projects from an Ap2.1.4 format.

I can't recall having issues like this in moving from 1.5 to 2.0.

I also tried starting up in 32-bit only, repairing the trial library via command+option as well. Neither had an effect.

This is killing me because I love the new library switch option, the AF point metadata, and the ability to import sRAW if need be.

Quick question as I wait for my A3, which is somewhere in the bowels of Fedex... Does A3 give you the option to automatically name projects by date? I saw that LR does it, iPhoto does it, and I really want Aperture to do it.

I went to my friendly local Apple store and bought the 3.0 upgrade for $99. Just finished loading it, and it looks and works great on my iMac. No issues at all!! :)

Seems like when people are having problems they are using laptops or have wacky setups with their photo libraries. Not sure why many programs are just not laptop friendly.

Dr. Pete, yes, you can name projects by date. You can also sort projects by date (Oldest first or Newest first).

No problems with Ap3 on my MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Yeah, I guess it's hard to generalize, but it just seems that more people have problems when they are using laptops.

Anyway, I'm totally digging the GPS tagging feature! Basically the program will import a GPX file from your GPS unit and you can tag your photos within A3! Can I get a Woot?
