Yeah, I guess it's hard to generalize, but it just seems that more people have problems when they are using laptops.

Anyway, I'm totally digging the GPS tagging feature! Basically the program will import a GPX file from your GPS unit and you can tag your photos within A3! Can I get a Woot?

Woot ....

And runs fine on my lappy. I store pics on the hard drive not the library and have about 50gb on the lappy and 50gb on a NAS without issue.

Dr. Pete, yes, you can name projects by date. You can also sort projects by date (Oldest first or Newest first).

So when I import, all my images from that import will just fall into a project named with today's date?

I generally prefer that since I shoot kids/pets/landscapes on the same day and want to further categorize them after the import, not do 3 separate imports.

Yep, just tried it. You can name a project with a date (I used "February 13, 2010") and import photo files from an SD or CF card into that project.

I can do that now in A2--my question is whether A3 can name it automatically...

I have the 3.06 C2D w/4 gigs of ram on my new MBP. I'm finding that A3 kicks muly fans I to high gear in a hurry. Not sure why at all. Fwiw, I imported 20 pics from my 5D2 to try out this trial. I'm a LR user normally. Terribly optimized program. It "processes" edits incredibly slow. Tried all the abov options too.

Does A3 give you the option to automatically name projects by date? I saw that LR does it, iPhoto does it, and I really want Aperture to do it.

No, Aperture will not automatically name your projects by date.

The date you are seeing in Lightroom under the "Folder" section represents the actual folder structure on your hard drive where the pictures are being stored. Aperture can also automatically create this same type of dated folder structure.

Aperture's "Projects" are more similar to Lightroom's "Collections". The difference is that you don't have to use them in Lightroom and you do have to use them in Aperture. The name of a "Project" has to be manually typed in or selected from your existing ones - it can't be automatically named with the current date. If that field is left blank during the import process, the project is automatically named "Untitled Project".

For your purposes, you could create a project called "Kids" and have all of your pictures imported into a folder on your hard drive labeled "2010-02-15" (or whatever date structure you like). After the import is done, you could create projects named "Pets" and "Landscapes" and move the appropriate pictures there. The end result will be 1 import, 1 dated folder on your hard drive, and 3 projects in Aperture.

No, it doesn't name the project automatically. You have to do that yourself.

Bummer--that was one thing I hoped would carry over from iPhoto.

Now if I can figure out where the heck my upgrade is in the FedEx system I'd be set. :(

Is anyone else having a problem with the loop?

I'm running a 15" MBP 2.2ghz Core2duo with 4GB of ram. And unlike Ap2, the 3.0 trial library I'm running with both an imported up-converted project from Ap2 and a set of fresh downloads to a new project in 3.0 runs fine in all aspects; except, I have to wait on the loop to render my images in the loop viewer circle. This is driving me batty!

I don't have this issue at all in Ap2 only in Ap3.

This loop slowness issue combined with all the horror stories in here from converting the Ap2 libraries has me worried about buying the full version of 3.

I have 4 separate Ap 2.1.4 libraries for a total of about 300+GB that would need conversion to 3.0 if I made the jump. But the loop slowness alone is painful. Move the loop tool wait for render, move the tool, and wait for render.

Also when I did the fresh import the loop use was fine for that one project, but after a reboot the loop was just as slow in that project as the other two previous imported projects from an Ap2.1.4 format.

I can't recall having issues like this in moving from 1.5 to 2.0.

I also tried starting up in 32-bit only, repairing the trial library via command+option as well. Neither had an effect.

This is killing me because I love the new library switch option, the AF point metadata, and the ability to import sRAW if need be.

I feel your pain, i'm running a CoreDuo MBP and it does the rendering whenever I move the loupe, this is uncharacteristic of AP2

I have a similar problem with adjustments. There is a delay while processing which is really annoying. Don't think I'll be rushing to upgrade until I see LR3.

I have just finished upgrading my AP2 library, MacBook Pro 13" 4Gb RAM. Took about 30 minutes and it is currently processing about 600 images, not sure what it is doing but seems to be ok.

For information I have done all of this in 32 bit mode after reading the Apple discussion forums. I tried the processing bit in 64 Bit mode and the app hung up and started to cause the machine to slow.

Back in 32 bit now for the last 235 pictures and all seems fine.

Can anybody confirm that A3 takes advantage of the hi-perf GPU of a Macbook Pro? Normally I have my MBP on the "small" GPU because I don´t have any real use for it, and I hate the fan noise. But perhaps A3 needs the "big" GPU? I just tried switching it on, and I had the feeling that A3 was doing better.

Yeah, seems like running the program in 32 bit mode avoids a lot of the problems people are describing. Fortunately, my machine is not capable of running the 64 bit EFI firmware.

This link may help some people.
