The SX210 is underwhelming. I thought Canon had slowed the MP wars down when the G11 had fewer MPs than the G10. I guess not. :( The camera is still slow, now at f/5.9 on the longer end (rather than f/5.3), and honestly, 392mm doesn't appeal much to me. Anything past 300mm looks pretty bad on my SX110, and the only time I shoot that far is for extreme street photography (I don't use telephoto lenses for street photography).

Can anyone please tell me how reliable Canon's release dates generally are? I pre-ordered the SD1400 is the day it was announced from Amazon thinking that it would be released late February and I'd have it in my hands first week of march (got overnight shipping even). This is because my gf is visiting next weekend and I really needed it. It's February 25th and it's still showing as a pre-order. Can I expect it next week or how does this go? Thanks.

Has anyone tried the SD3500 with its touch screen?

Bought it, disliked it, returned it.

I gave the SD3500 a fair chance, but it lacks in many areas. Here's my take on it.

Pros:
-Beautiful touchscreen that is very sensitive, even with a screen cover
-Very light, compact and portable
-Surprisingly fast AF and shooting speed
-Fairly quick flash recharge time
-Excellent battery life
-Fun bonus features (now found on almost all new P&S Canon cameras)
-Very decent HD video
-Very slick looking (this is important to some people)
-Very good sunlight quality images
-Timer modes w/smile detection work well

Cons:
-Poor low light quality (in all modes)
-14MP is WAY to large for the wee little 1/2.3 sensor
-Annoying plastic lens protector picks up glare at various shooting angles (this seriously needs to go!) and softens/fogs too many images
-Mono video audio recording
-Seriously lacks in features and shooting modes
-Wide angle screen tends to bend backgrounds and edges of photos
-No view finder
-Macro mode resets (disables) between shooting and previewing images
-Auto mode WB fails miserably in moderate to low light shooting
-Images come out a little too soft (even with increasing sharpness in Program mode)
-AF is on the slow side when chasing moving items

Canon made massive improvements in their touchscreen technology that I hope to see extend into more P&S cameras, but 14 megapixel was an overkill for the sensor size. I think the average consumer can have a tendency to believe that higher MP equals better image quality. But for the price, the quality and features do not balance. If the sharpness was boosted a little, the MP reduced to 10-12, and the reintroduction of some program modes (Av, Tv) this would be a far better product and worth the money.

But then again, for a consumer who does NOT edit their photos or work with them at 100%, this camera may shine in their eyes

Overall, 3/5.

Have you been able to track moving objects with P&S cameras before??? I almost never do so. The only time I tried, after the 20D battery ran dry and I didn't have a backup, I didn't succeed - i couldn't get a photo of the people jumping in the air.

The 3500 camera has a little white 'focus' box that will (in theory) follow an object around the LCD when you touch the object on the screen. It has a serious tendency to lag behind, even on a slow moving dog, and will often drop its focus. But this was far from an issue to me, especially compared to the the amount of noise in low light. And I agree, chasing any moving object is a challenge with all P&S cameras. However, my old A710 stood as much a fighting chance as an AF camera can with the option to manually set the shutter speed. Nice catch.

After reading your review I picked up an S90 tonight..battery is charging...we'll see how I like it. I did play with the sd3500 a bit in the store and thought it was okay, but I really liked the f/2 on the s90, RAW, and the 2 function rings. I think I can control the camera better than if it had a touchscreen although the ts was pretty neat.

while it does lag, i really would like to see that option in SLR. I did play with SD3500 recently, I really like that little box.

It would be nice to select focus box on SLR and then camera would follow that object automatically.

It's available on most of the EOS DSLRs I've used. "Ring of Fire" ring any bells?

that different

with SD3500 you click on the screen on any object, for example someones face, and SD3500 will track that object on entire screen from edge to edge even all the way to a corner, with EOS cameras (not sure about 1d) af points don't go to corners.

when if you loose the object in LCD, and later it comes back into frame camera will pick it up again and auto track it again.
