The setup...50D, 430EXII, 50 1.8, Av mode. Trying to take some low light, side bounced flash pictures of my daughter. I have the External Flash AF Assist turned "on" through the camera menu. The AF Assist will not emit and the lens can't find focus. I went into a dark room (lights off) and no AF Assist. The thing that really grinds me here, is that I can turn the camera to one of the "auto" like settings and the 430 blows red light out of it all day and focus is achieved. I looked through the 430 manual and the 50D manual and can't find anything.

What am I doing wrong?

Maybe this belongs in the Flash forum, I don't now, but it seems to be related to the camera.

I dont want to suggest something so simple. but I've made the mistake before. The flash will only emit an assist beam if the camera is set to 'One Shot' Focus, so check you dont have it set to AI Servo.

Also, the custom function III/5(AF-assist beam firing) in the camera must be set to either Enable or Only External Flash emits, if set to disabled, it obviously wont fire. EDIT: just re-read your post and noticed you have this on, check your AF mode and you should be good to go.

Hope that helps!
