Hi all, im fairly new to this forum, and just shot my first basketball game over the weekend. I would love to have some honest critiques please, so i can better myself. I used a Canon 50D paired with a 85mm 1.2, 1200ISO, in ap priority. I also for the first time tried the back focus technique, as you can tell from early pictures my focus was terrible, but improved as the game went on.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Is there anything preventing you from sitting on the floor?
Certainly some nice shots, pick 2 of your favorites and post them right here or link to 8 from flickr. More people will provide feedback if it is easy to view the pictures.

I appreciate the comment. Keep working at it and just keep some of our suggestions in mind while you are out. Next time you are in the area get ahold of me.

my, my, my oh MY!!! That last shot on the website made me belly laugh! 14-5. And after all those shots?!!! Looked at 'em all. Decent white balance on your shots. Colors looked great and overall exposures seemed good as well. Nice job there.

If that was your first effort, you came away with PLENTY of good shots. Do you have the focus assigned to the * button? If not, that helps a great deal shooting basketball. Also, camera in AI Servo focus and centerpoint only chosen? If so, keep that * button mashed down while shooting at the same time. This gives you the best oppty to get infocus shots. For basketball at that age, you probably only need 1/320 on the shutter because they're not moving really fast yet.

Definitely get down onto the court and as low as possible so we're not seeing the tops of heads. Those guys are way down there to begin with!

The only other thing I'd say is when the action is going AWAY from you it's time to put the camera down for a minute or two. But overall, you got a lot of balls and faces in your shots. Overall, VERY good first effort! Make sure to share those shots with the kids and their parents.

I agree with everything mentioned above. As I looked through your shots I didn't think they were bad for your first outing. Just keep in mind to try not to cut off arms and legs. After all these are little guys so they should fit in the frame pretty easy.

This is my first season shooting basketball and now that the season is almost over, I finally feel like I'm getting some decent shots.

Keep shooting and have fun. It will get easier and better.
