Here's my first edit with Aperture 3.
Canon 20D + 100mm f/2 + 580EX

It was nice to see Aperture implement a local adjustment brush like in Lightroom. The tool itself works in a similar fashion, but the options are better. The effects are easier to edit after the fact than in Lightroom and the different Overlay modes make it very easy to tell if you missed a spot.

I used standard image adjustments on this image and also put the new brush to good use with Dodge, Sharpen, & Vibrance on the eyes, mild noise reduction on parts of the face, moderate noise reduction and a little dodging on the background.

I have to say, that just like Aperture 2, there were times when Aperture 3 was using 100% of both processors on my iMac.

Nice edit. I will be testing the trial extensively before deciding if it will be worth upgrading to from version 2. I like the new features and all, but performance will be a deal breaker (damn these 17MP images!).

I was curious about this also. I'm currently using a 20D that only generates 7MP files, but I won't have that camera forever.

I downloaded some sample 23MB RAW files from a 5DII to test performance with those. It really seemed about the same - sometimes adjustments were instant and sometimes it went to 100% CPU usage and took 30 seconds to process the thumbnails.

What's Aperture doing here that any other image editor couldn't?

Honest question - I can't see anything "special" about this edit.

There's not much that any one image editor can do that another comparable one can't do.

The question here is what can Aperture 3 do that Aperture 2 couldn't. In this case, the answer is burn the background, smooth selected patches of skin, and brighten, sharpen, & saturate the eyes without going to an external editor or generating a TIF file. All of these things were already available in Lightroom 2 and Aperture users were hoping they would show up in version 3.
