So I stumbled upon a process. BW gradient map (inverted), color gradient map, and selective color. Its produces a look similar to the "find edges" or "neon edges" filters, but with more control. I just bought a whole cartload of fireworks, so look for more of this series!

Mess around with a black and white (reversed ala negative) gradient map over a selective color layer. Drop opacities, adjust sliders on the colors and the black white and grey channels of selective color, etc. I'm also not 100% on the details, this was more or less a beautiful accident with some idea of what I was doing. But I only used four layers total, and one was plain curves, so whatever I did I did in three steps.
just kidding, I understand.
