Yongnuo Rf 602 won't fire Vivitar 283

I have two Vivitar 283 flashes and I can't get the Yongnuo Rf 602 to fire either one of them. The Yongnuo Rf 602 works fine with my Sigma 500 DG and my Alien Bees but nothing on the 283s.
I have searched all over the place but I can't find any info on this. If anyone knows of any issues with the 283s and the Yongnuo Rf 602 please let me know.
Thanks

"I spoke with Jim last week to get the skinny on the reintroduction of the 285HV. The 285HV is basically a pimped-out 283 that also offers a zoom head and full manual control - just the way we like it. 285HV's are also safe for your digicam, with a ~6v trigger voltage."

probably the Trigger voltage is different?

"Trigger Voltage

Much has been made of the older 283's trigger voltage. This is voltage you can measure across the contacts in the hot shoe when the flash is primed for use. Reports of older units packing 300 volts or more abound. When cameras where all mechanical this kind of voltage wasn't a problem but used on modern electronic film or digital cameras that kind of voltage may be destructive. Unfortunately ms-information also abounds. There are claims that those "made in Japan" units are the oldest and will have this problem. I have a 283 from the Japan era and it measures less than 10 volts just like my Korean unit. The only way you can be sure is to measure the voltage coming from your own 283 before using it on a modern camera.

Even if it does have a high trigger voltage it can still be useful. Attach it to a slave and it is totally removed from your camera and cannot do any damage."

I Fried my rf 602 attaching it to an old flash

What about the Vivitar 285 (non-HV)?

Is it trigger voltage safe?

The sync Voltage on th Vivitar 285 (no HV designation) varies radically from unit to unit. They can be as low as 6 Volts and as high as 500 Volts.

The YN 602 seems to be intolerant of high sync Voltages, the best estimate I have seen is they are OK to about 12 Volts or so. Note this is just a reasonable estimate as YN cites no sync Voltage specification. So, do NOT take the cited 12 Volts as some definitive specification.

Enjoy! Lon

Get yourself a Wein Safe-sync, it'll work properly then. I've used the monoplug version with with an old flash, and it works fine.

I just fired my Vivitar 283 with my new RF-602's and it worked! With fully charged Eneloop batteries my 283 fired up right away after 23 years!

Hey Lon, any suggestions on how to do this? I was about to grab my Dad's old 283 and put my YN's on it but thankfully I read this post first.

C&C welcome.

How about you read my post from earlier? I told you exactly what you need to use the Vivitar 283 with a RF-602 receiver.

Cause I was hoping Lon had something in his arsenal that could do this cheaper. For the price I might as well pick up another 285HV.

I recently picked up another 283 at a garage sale! It looks and fires fine, but not with my rf-602... So far I'm 1 for 2 on the old vivitars!

You probably have fried the the receiver, does it still work with your other strobes? The old Vivitars can have as much as 600v sync voltage, the Yongnuo can handle around 10-12v
