High sync voltage was a problem long before digicams. It could cause arcing of the flash sync contacts resulting in them melting to the point that they didn't touch as the shutter opened. = No flash sync whatsoever. It was a cumulative problem... just because everything was fine 1, 10, 100 times it didn't mean there wasn't damage. That's why the newer hv's addressed the problem. I have 2 hv's from the late '90's that have 6 volt sync. I remember reading an article about high sync voltage in shutterbug around the same time. (late '90's)

I emailed the folks I purchased my 602's from asking if 13.1V was too high. The answer was no. I tried it out and it works fine. The triggers don't appear to have any damage.

I'm using a Safe-Sync on a flash that has 100V at the sync port, since 22.5V has been reported to fry the 602's. The flash with the Safe-Sync is polarity sensitive, it only works one way. If I were you, I'd switch the polarity and see what happens on your 283.

Have Fun,

Rob
