How are you guys go about buying used Canon accessories with a blank warranty card and still manage to service the unit when gets broken?

It looks like Canon only offer the Manuf. warranty to the original owner only and it`s not transferable. When you ship the item, do they also look for a copy of original receipt? That would be not under your name , but under the original purchaser.
I called Canon today and asked if my 6month old REBEL`s warranty is transferable, and the lady said NO! That sucks!

Did I miss something here?

This does not belong in this section. But to answer your question...technically, yes, you need the to be the original owner. The warranty card doesn't really matter. Canon will ask you to send a copy of the receipt. But I've bought some used stuff and sent them to canon (with a copy of the receipt from previous owner) and they never bothered to ask me if I was the original owner and still honored the warranty.

I always wondered about this myself. So you're pretty much outta luck unless you have a receipt?

If you have an L lens they use the date code if no receipt. I think they can use the serial number on the body too. But that means 12 months from date of manufacture instead of date of purchase.

It depends...if you are lucky the answer is yes but lately Canon tightens their policy so I'm afraid the answer is no.

i think the receipt is the most important part in retaining the warranty. The warranty card doesnt provide any means of verification.

Thanks for the feedback. Soon i' ll be selling my mint 1 month old BG-E5 grip with blank warranty card, so this means my buyer is out of luck too? Or should i include the original receipt for him?

As long as you include a copy of the receipt (or the receipt itself but he will need to make a copy to send to Canon anyway) he's good to go

OP,

Good question, but it would be better served in the Lens forum. As others have stated, you need a receipt for a warranty claim.

Sometimes, with a little tender-loving care, you might be able to talk them into servicing the item without a receipt, but not the majority of the time.

I bought the Rebel camera at BESTBUY and It comes with 4 year warranty through them. (I paid for it)
They cover accidental damage for handling etc. The Bestbuy warranty was the selling point , on how I got rid of my Rebel in 2 days. There are lots of debate about BESTBUY crappy warranty, but I think this really depends on the specific Bestbuy location you send your camera to.

I remember buying a point and shoot Sony and after 3 years of owning it, i noticed 2 dead pixels on the LCD screen. I dropped it off at BESTBUY and waited for 1 week to be fixed. They called me after a week and told me they could not repair it. They gave me a store credit of the same amount I bought the camera 3 years ago. So I used it to purchase another camera, but this time it wasn`t a 3.2 Megapixel camera but 7 ! :-) Was the BESTBUY warranty good? Hell yeah!

So right now I dont have an EOS as I just sold it yesterday... Now, should I grab a 50D, wait for T2i or 60D ? or switch to NIKON? :-)

Having dealt with a few warranty repairs from Canon all they want is the receipt. I've never had to send in the warranty card, only a copy of the receipt.

I registered my first lens with Canon, when I sent it in for repairs, they never asked for the reciept. Not sure if the fact that I registered it made a difference.
