Ray.Petri I’m full of useless facts More info | Apr 02, 2021 05:02 | #1142 Phoenixuk wrote in post #19217400 There's a major restoration project going on with HMS Victory at the moment. The top masts have been removed temporarily to relieve the weight on the hull which is sagging. A new cradle has been built to support the ship which more replicates the effect of it being in water. It has also been repainted in more authentic colours which although it may be how she was painted at The Battle of Trafalgar it is not as striking as the colours that we had all got used to! A lot of work still to be done to repair and stabilise the ship so that it lasts for at least another two hundred years! https://www.hms-victory.com/restoration Thanks for that info Mark. The link didn't seem to give many details of the restrictions on entry at the current time. Ray-P

What's new - it seems to mean even less today with the public having the wool pulled over it's eyes and accepting it - but I won't go there as my views will get too explicit. Ray-P

Beautiful dinghy. Did your father make it? Curious what it's made of. I wondered about the oars too, but realized they are probably made that way for balance. The short massive handle balances the loom and blade.

The short massive handle balances the loom and blade. Yes, they balance so that you don't have to waste energy lifting the blades at the end of the strokes. You don't see it in this picture but the handles cross by a bit more than an adult hand's width. You get so used to it that you don't even notice it, and you get a longer pull. The bottoms of these boats have a good shape so they just slide through the water and are light to row and easy to maneuver. I don't know anything. But I know other things.
