How many of you guys that have a 1D Mark III use it for portraits?

My problem is that I am going to buy a new body and was set on getting a 5D Mark II. The reason is that I mainly make most of my side money doing family portraits and Team/Individual picture packages. I started out doing action shots, and I still enjoy it very much, but it doesn't generate the revenue that the team portraits or family portraits do. I'm still going to do sports photography so that is when I started to think about the Mark III.

Should I just keep my 50D for sports and get the 5D Mark II or get the 1D Mark III and use it for both types of photography.

Note: I don't see myself doing landscapes or product photography.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions/help.

I do........My main business is sports but I also cover a lot of team pictures and dance portraits. I like having the same controls and same battery in both cameras so I have 2 Mark III's

Isn't the price of a used Mark III about the same as a new 5D Mark II right now? A lot of people who bought the Mark III did it because it functioned well as both a portrait camera and sportshooting camera. If you were mostly going to use the new body for portraits, then the 5D Mark II is probably a better choice.

I used a 5D for people and animal portraits and my 1D Mk3 for sports and birds etc. I did try the 1D for portraits and found it to be more than competitive, in fact, I have sold my 5D.

The only reason I would get the 5D II over a Mark III as it pertains to portraits would be if the larger file size or full frame were a big factor. For me they are not but YMMV

There is still that certain something from the images from the full frame sensor over the 1.3. That being said, the IQ from the 1D3 is superb, and I would not hesitate to use it for portraits over my 5D if needed. Only issue for me would be adjusting to the field of view differences with my lenses. I love my 5D/35L combo for full body shots and the 85L for upper body/head shots. Those lenses become an odder FL for me on the 1D3.

The 1D3 would make a great camera for both. Go for it!

Mark III is killer for portraits. Killer for just about anything, actually.

I use it as a portrait and wedding camera and it really nails it for me. Fantasic colour, noise control dynamic range, and pure hardcore, blistering performance.
