Before & After #257

This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #258".

Straight up family portrait taken over Christmas (a request from my parents). I've been too busy (and procrastinating) to PP this and make them a print. The shot is lousy in my humble opinion (the best of several taken), so see if you can work some magic on it. From left to right: Myself, my wife, dad, mom, Peter (my brother's partner), and my brother - who never smiles

LR2 - Rotate, Tone, Recovery, Clarity, Vibrance, Fill Light, Blacks, Exposure,
CS2 - Add Scenery to the left, Merge, Clone/Blend, Reconstruct Chris's Elbow, Liquify Tool - Give Brother A Smile , Levels, Curves x's 3, Saturation Tool, Blur Tool, Burn Tool, eye work, some face dodging, Vignette, Lighting Effects 2'oclock spotlight, Crop, USM, selectively sharpen, Liquify tool Chris ear tuck... I dont know... maybe in the end I screwed with the picture too much. But here we go.

Open in Camera Raw, adjust exposure, recovery, fill light, blacks, sharpen, contrast. Transfer to CS3. duplicate background, set black white and grey point in levels.
Crop. Use colour replacement brush to re-do halos around hair lines. De-saturate yellow channel for teeth.
Gaussian blur on sky and sea and high pass sharpen slightly on people.
White stroke and flatten

photoshop cs2 I used brush and used the blk foreground color to make it a black n wht and then I erased to bring out specific colors and then I cropped

Adjust Level, hue and saturation, add warm filter
Finally use topaz lab to create a cartoon effect !

Extended the canvas
cloned the background and created a new jacket arm
reduced noise
set highlights and grey balance in curves
cropped

And also apologies for a judging round without a detailed breakdown for each person. But quickly:

Lore - I love how you expanded the photo (though the elbow gives it away)

Nigel - great color pops.

blsvlo - Interesting selective color, but next time post an image that's 1024 to a side max.

VBengland - Tack sharp PP, I love it.

reisset - I love Fractalius stuff. Unusual choice of settings

chrisa - A very nice (perhaps the subtlest) conversion.


Hands down, this has to go to VBengland,! He did a great job of a pure conversion and really brought out the faces out.

congrats vbengland.... for some reason it wasn't letting me put a bigger pixel up..so I had to keep changing image size! I have a lot to learn and having fun trying.
