The 85 was my FAVORITE lens of all times. I liked it so much that I eventually had to upgrade to the 85L. They are both some of Canon's best lenses.

Some shots taken with my 85mm f/1.8 (i only used it wide open) :

Bought it at Cameta in USA and with the $70.00 duties it came ot to under $500. I also got the hood and a Hoya pro1 UV filter with it. Just the lens here in MTL is selling for $590 CND! I would say I saved $200.

I always check www.photoprice.ca (external link) before making a lens purchase.

there is no duty or levy on objective lenses coming from the US to canada. it was either tax (which sounds about correct on a ~400 lens), or you were wrongly charged those monies.

This is how $500 CAD breaks down for Canadian shoppers:

$379.95 USD
+$28.95 S&H
+$0.00 Duty and Brokerage
+$53.16 Tax (13%)

$462.06 USD
x 1.0809 (external link) exchange rate = $499.44 CAD

I hate to tell you but there is. When USA seller ships UPS, You have to PAY to get someone to make the Customs papers brokerage fee (usually about $15-$20) and to clear the item and then you get charged a tax on top of that. You pay both in the end. Only USPS does not have that fee because it is Government owned. Quebec is not like the rest Canada...we have our own rotten laws here.

The only time I don't pay a dime is when I order from Hong Kong.

Actually it's more like this.

$399.95 USD - lens
+ 27.95 USD - hood
+ 39.95 USD - filter
+ 34.00 USD - shipping
+ exchange rate
+ $71.00 CND at the door

= holy cow I paid more than I had thought I did. It's ok...I still saved $200 if I would have bought it here locally as just the hood and the filter would have been about $130 right there. Basically the Lens alone cost me $500 CND and worth every cent.

Hey...you know what..this copy is so sharp...it cut a hole right through my wallet.

Thx all.

According to photoprice.ca it is $487.22 CAD shipped from B&H, so with a filter and hood you still got a good deal. You did save around $200.

I paid $425 for mine used (no box or anything, just the lens) I could have probably got a better deal but it was local, so no shipping plus I got to test the lens first hand.

I like mine, it's great for low light but I mostly shoot with it wide open (or up to f/2.8 or so), if I can shoot at f/4+ then I prefer my 70-200, which mine is a super de-duper sharp copy. :)

From what I am seeing the 85mm @1.8 is sharper way than my 70-200 2.8 IS @2.8. Only my 70-200 f4 IS would have a chance. Not even my 17-40 touches this 85mm @ 1.8.

I just can't believe how sharp it is at 1.8. here is an example. about 8 feet away hand held and messing around.

I see the purple fringing on that crop which is a problem with this lens with very high contrast edges, when oen of them is blown out.

Yup... but I think the flash has to with a lot of it. I am sure i would not have gotten that if i was shooting on a tripod with no flash.

Probably not but you can get pp when shooting outdoors although it is not as prevalent as some make it out. I primarily use it for portraits, with subjects sometimes backlit, and even under those conditions I rarely get any pp. Just don't shoot chrome ;-)a

I'm seriously considering this lens. I want to get something a bit longer than my 24-70 for indoors, but I'm not sure this is long enough. I think I'm going to have to add this to my long list of "Will buy eventually" items.

Not much choice after the 85mm prime there is a 100mm F/2 and then your stuck buying the 135 L. I don't think the 100mm is as sharp as the 85mm 1.8 but I have read that the 135L is sharper than the 85mm 1.8.

I think everyone should have a 85mm 1.8 :D for the price, it just has so much to offer... great value.
