Are you saying Canon does not do this? That is really sad they have not done the same as Nikon.....

What I'm saying is that Nikon had the largest slice of the pie in terms of camera/gear sales to professional photographers for atleast three decades..

Whilst I was working as a pro-photographer I would sometimes go to international sporting events in Australia.. Nikon always had a gear available to accredited shooters.. I never saw this deal from Canon..

Maybe today things are different..

I was told a couple months ago by a small town camera store owner that Nikon and Canon each had about 45% in retail sales in the USA in the camera market. From what you are saying (if it is still true today, and I realize you are not sure) that Nikon has a bigger share, or should have a bigger share for the support they give the professional photographers.

Perhaps the person that I talked to does not really know what he was talking about.

Thank you for your reply.

Charles,, what I'm saying is that from the 1970s through to the 1990s Nikon had the larger slice of professional sales world wide than any 35mm camera on the market..

Today I wouldn't know what the figures are,,probably equal to Canon.. But one thing I definitely know is that living in Asia I see far more Nikons than Canons DSLRs.. The only Canons I see are usually owned by Caucasian tourists..

What I've noticed also is that more Nikons are owned my Asians,,rarely do I see an Asian Canon shooter..

With all that gear around & with a Nikon sponsored event, you'd think they would ban Canon stuff, well, I suppose that the pro's just make up their own minds

It would never happen.. It's not up to the sponsors of the event to ban anything,, they sponsor for advertising purposes..

Even the organisers wouldn't ban Canon if Nikon are the main sponsors, even if Nikon propose to pull out of the event.. This will leave a vacuum where another manufacturer would slip in..

Just a guy in Canada, but heard a while ago that accredited photographers would have Canon gear available to them at the Olympics.

AFAIK over here in the UK, the pro market seems to be mainly Canon and there is a lot of support from Canon for pro users at events. Nikon did rule the 70s to 90s but from the end of the 90s I understand from the journalists and pros I have spoken with is that Canon has become the major player and the bigger company. This is their opinion that has been passed on to me you understand. I do not have any facts and figures. Since these are folk who have been earning their living in photography for years I guess they should know what they are talking about. I was at a pro show in January and Canon definitely had the bigger stand and presence and most of the pros giving seminars were Canon users. In my own travels I have also met more Canon than Nikon users. Perhaps there are regional differences?

I have been fortunate to have been "accredited" for a couple of professional events, even though I am not in the remotest way a pro photographer. In both instances Canon had an area set-up to provide assistance for the CPS members and accredited photographers.

Here is the information from the Canon Professional Services (CPS) website .... Sounds like they have the Olympics covered, as does Nikon.

CPS in the Main Press Center
Canon Professional Services (CPS) will be conveniently located inside the Main Press Center in the Canada Place/Vancouver Convention Center and at the Main Press Center in the Whistler Conference Center. CPS Repair and Loan Services Available
Canon Professional Services will have international staff on-hand to assist accredited photographers with their Canon camera service needs. Clean and check service, and routine repairs for Canon cameras, will be handled by our technicians on a complimentary basis with a targeted turn-around time of 12 hours.
*Note: Only clean and check services will be available at the Whistler Media Center. Any product requiring additional service will be sent to Vancouver. 12-hr. service does not apply in these cases. For expedited repairs, photographers are encouraged to bring equipment to the Vancouver facility.
Registration
Beginning at 9 a.m. on February 10th accredited photographers are encouraged to visit the CPS Center to register for Canon repair and loan services.
Canon Reception
On Thursday, February 11th (7:00-10:00 p.m.), Canon and Nikon will host an opening reception at The Vancouver Aquarium. Please join us for refreshments and entertainment. (Space may be limited).

Canon has the CPS, or Canon Professional Service and they have for years. In fact, Canon maintains a permanent office at the Indy Speedway.

When I worked for them, we would have CPS at most major sporting events. As a CPS member, you could have camera problems repaired on site and borrow lens and bodies. You could borrow the equipment not only at an event, but you could have one shipped to your studio or home for use on assignments. Most photographers don't purchase a $5,000- 8,000 lens if they only need it for one assignment.

There are stringent requirements to become a CPS member. They basically want to make sure that members are working photographers. I worked for Canon in the early to mid 80's, and I know the CPS program has changed.

Here is the CPS part of the Canon USA site: http://www.usa.canon.com …code=CPS&fcategoryid=2647 (external link)

Here is the list of events CPS will attend in 2010: http://www.usa.canon.com …code=CPS&fcategoryid=2647 (external link)
