Long story short, I recently purchased a 5D on behalf of my relative from this forum. The seller stated the actuation < 4000. I had Canon clean and checkup and was told it had 26,700 clicks on it. I was very much disappointed since I have been telling my relative how trustful people here were and assured her I knew what I was doing. Frankly I would not mind for a 26k 5D however this is not for me. I asked the seller about it and his reply was simple: That's just an "Estimate". Yeah right.
What's your take on this?

Their estimate was way off. Is that their whole reply?? That's pretty jacked up, IMO.

You cannot leave any negative feedback. You could contact a mod about the situation and they could make the decision to disuser the account if the complaints are rampant enough. You could try to exercise paypal or credit card chargeback procedures too, as limited as that may be.

The seller could have been told the same story if they bought it used, and really didn't know, and if they were the only owner, than they should have known better what the shutter count range was, that is pretty far off.

This is a private dispute which we will not get involved in.

Agreed, however it has been stated by mods and it has happened that if a member creates enough of a stir due to complaints, their account has been banned. That is all I meant by that. Sorry for the lack of clarity and I agree with the current policies even though sometimes it really hurts to encounter a deal even worse than this situation! Been there, done that fairly recently....

creates enough of a stir due to complaints

You need to be more accurate that that too ;-)a Banning members is only done if enough evidence has been provided that a scam has taken place (or is about to take place). This case is simply about an estimated actuation number. Nobody knows if seller bougth the camera used, or how seller came to the estimate.

I think what you should do is contact seller and see what he has to say about it. If he is the second owner and he mentioned that in his ad and also mentioned that first guy told him these many shutter counts then may be you are out of luck. If he says he's the original owner then he's to explain this.

Unless you can double check with a software or directly from Canon for sure what the shutter count is, I ALWAYS assume it has at least 20,000 actuations than what the seller "expects" it to have. There was a Craigslist ad for a used 50D locally the guy said it had 3700 actuations according to his CF card, when in reality it had over 28,000 !!! Had I not checked it, I would have believed it as the body really looked brand new !

Since you can't leave negative feedback here I'm thinking of having a website where people can put negative feedback on POTN users :).

No need to create your own. See this: http://www.heatware.com/eval.php?id=61178 (external link)

I expected that site to be used more and more, but I just don't see anything ever posted there. I even created my account a couple of years ago. Oh well, it would be great if folks would indeed use heatware more, it would be a great tool like resellerratings.com for the online vendors.

That's the exact reason why I don't buy stuff off eBay or CL. I have met many wonderful wonderful people here. But apparently this person take advantage of the inability of getting accurate actuation of some Canon cameras. It only takes one bad apple to ruin the spirit.

I sold my 5D recently. In the process, one of the prospective buyers asked if we could meet at the Irvine service center to do a count validation. I said absolutely. Unfortunately he backed out before ever meeting, but I thought it was a pretty good idea on his part as that's the only way to check. I know that's only an option for a few of us who live near the service center.

For the OP, I'd ask for a refund. That's some pretty bad false advertisement if the shutter count is that far off. I'd consider like +-10% to be ok, 20% is getting bad...but he's like 5X off.

this type of situation actually happened to me when i purchased used 50D from other reputable forum (not here). seller claimed that he was selling it for his shooting buddy and he has good if not excellent feedback. he said camera was in excellent condition with a few months warranty left and around 3k clicks. long story short, i made the payment, shipping was fast, communications were prompt. then i checked it had almost 11k, manual was torned, strap has musty smell and color was faded. i was upset and msg him back. he apologized and ask what he could have done to make everything ok and get a good fedback. he sent me his own manual and strap. i sent the 50D to canon to check the inside part since it's under warranty. turned out everything was ok, camera had no scratch and in excellent condition. i gave him good feedback just because he sounded sincere and he communicated very promptly with me. and as long as canon checked the camera and make sure everything is in perfect working condition, no cosmetic blemishes, i don't really care about 11k clicks. but this is just my personal preference and YMMV.

26k is a vast difference from 4k but you still have a lot of life left on the camera. I only recently checked my 1000d count and I assumed it would be around 6k but it's actually at 23k. So, I'm way off on my estimate too. Personally, if I were the seller and gave an estimate that was grossly off I would offer some sort of restitution. Either allow the buyer to return it or give them 10-15% off. Then again, if I'm going to sell a body I might as well send it to Canon for a cleaning and have them retrieve the shutter acutations if EOSinfo can't.
