I bought a 40D new that I am about to sell. I have every picture I ever took with the camera in a file on my computer, including the out of focus, underexposed junk that needs to be deleted. There are only about 1,800 of them. Is there a chance I will be misrepresenting the camera to advertise it as having under 2,000 shutter actuations?

there is an app you can download that will tell you how many clicks a 40D has on it...it doesn't work with all models, hence some have to guess....

EOSinfo (external link) can tell you the shutter count on the 40D. It works on the 40D and newer cameras.

heck, I was surprised to know my own 50D had 23218 actuations and it was only 10 months old (I would have guesstimated more around 10-12k lol)

If you buy from an ad in a newspaper is it a reflection on the newspaper if the buyer has a dispute with the seller? The same principle applies. POTN has no investment in the sale. It is only a place to post the sale.

26k is a vast difference from 4k but you still have a lot of life left on the camera. I only recently checked my 1000d count and I assumed it would be around 6k but it's actually at 23k. So, I'm way off on my estimate too. Personally, if I were the seller and gave an estimate that was grossly off I would offer some sort of restitution. Either allow the buyer to return it or give them 10-15% off. Then again, if I'm going to sell a body I might as well send it to Canon for a cleaning and have them retrieve the shutter acutations if EOSinfo can't.

Agree 100% and that's what I would do.

True, but if a newspaper were to receive complaints from several readers indicating a scam being generated from their ads, I'm sure they would take action to no longer allow that advertiser space in their paper. The #1 goal should be to maintain the reputation of the publication.

Not saying this was a scam or indicating anything close to that....

And we have stated several times that we will take action provided we get clear evidence of scam.

Tommy, thank you for clearly indicating the stance from admin point of view. I appreciate it.
The purpose of my original post was not to seek any action or help from the POTN to resolve the case. I just want to bring it up and to see how others view it and how others would deal with it. The strong moral support from many other posters are great and deeply appreciated. Thanks everyone.

I'm glad to hear that, however this really doesn't match your first post of:

Just my opinion, an ad that the seller stated less than 4000 actuations ( from reading the OP it was not an estimate) , when in reality the number is almost 27,000 is the type of thing that would get admin attention.

not to change the topic, but I believe V-bulletin does have a ranking/feedback addition available for classified sections.

Not in my opnion and not based on what has been said here. There is no evidence that seller was deliberately misleading buyer. Seller said the number was an estimate. When I sold my 5D I had no way of knowing the accurate actuation number so I just gave an estimate based on how many photos I had on my hd. That number was NOT accurate since I have deleted many photos on my hd, and I deleted even more that never made it from the camera to the pc. Add to that that I got the image number reset at least once. Do anybody have any information wether any of these conditions apply in this case ? I think not and based on that this is a private dispute.

Yes and if you searched for this you we find that third party plugins is not installed here on POTN for security reasons.

You're not the seller are you? ;) haha....kidding

I get what you're saying 100%

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like the claim of "estimate" came after the fact...after the seller was confronted... were as the orignal ad read less than 4000..to me that implies the potential buyer would be purchasing a rarely or slightly used body.. it also more than likely increased chance of a quick sale. I would like to see the original ad to make sure it wasn't out right false advertising to get a quick sale...

No reason to get rude... were just having a conversation and it was a suggestion.

This is ridiculous. How can you underestimate 27,000 clicks to around 4,000. I could understand if it was around 20,000, but this is significantly different.

Only two possible explanations:
1. deliberate misleading
2. mentally sick
