Here are some shots from last weeks games. I usually shoot using the center zone focus, but after reading about Snyderman's issues with his center point focus I decided to give it a try. I thought center point worked well. What do you think?

1st two were shot 1/500ss, f/2.8, iso 5000. Last four were shot 1/500ss, f/3.2, iso 5000.

Did you use the centerpoint expanded with the four points surrounding the centerpoint? Your #1 shot is a perfect example of the good focus I've been getting since taking the advice of another and using the centerpoint expanded focus mode.

My pictures from last nights game are processing in DPP right now. Came home with more keepers than ever before. I usually chimp off the known bad ones during breaks in action and then cull a few more while looking at them after upload. Probably deleted off 20% or so from the 170 I took home. Most because they were duplicates and only 5 or so for focus issues.

I'm not yet 100% certain whether my camera has an issue with centerpoint only focus, but can confirm that using centerpoint expanded produces stellar results! If this is what you used for your pics, I'm getting about the same level of focus as you got.

Nice shots!!! Are you happy with them?

For these shots I only used the center point focus not the expanded mode. I wanted to see how the center point worked after I read about your issues. I think the center point worked very well. When I compare to when I use the expanded mode, I didn't see any real difference in keepers. But after using center point focus, I think I like the expanded mode better.

For the most part I am happy with the shots. In #1 I don't like the motion blur, but not much I can do about that except use faster ss. Otherwise, I am happy with what I am getting. I think I am getting better results each week. Of course the season is nearly over, but our Varsity should be going to the playoffs so hopefully I will be able to continue shooting basketball for a little longer.

Thanks for the comments.

Chris

Chris:

I'm going to give the centerpoint only focus one more shot during the JV game next week. I've had so much success using the centerpoint expanded--in fact, the ONLY real success with the 7D has been using the expanded focus mode.

And yeah, your shots are about as good as it gets indoors, ambient light and only 1/500th on the shutter speed. The color and WB looks great on your shots. Best thing about the 7D!
