7D Problem! -- bluish substance LEAKING from camera?

I hadn't used my camera in about a week. It has just been sitting in my camera bag. I was packing up to head out to my parents and I was throwing some stuff in my camera bag this morning and realized there was some bluish substance on my fingers after handling my camera. I figured I had touched some kind of blue marker and it got on my fingers and didn't really think anything of it.

I get to my parents house and open up the camera bag and take the 7D out. I then noticed some blueish color on my live view start/stop button. I got out a lightly damp paper towel and started wiping the button. After I wiped it clean I noticed if I kept dabbing it, the paper towel would keep getting stained. I can't physically see the blue substance, but when i press the towel up to it it definitely bleeds out blue crap.

What is wrong with my camera? What would cause this? What's inside the camera that could bleed out as a blueish tint? Please help! I will definitely be calling Canon customer service.

Here are some images of the blue stuff with my web cam.

I haven't got a clue - never seen anything remotely like this.

Let us know what Canon says.

Sorry for the bad luck, but if all the blue leaks out, will this give your shots a warmer feel? :)

(Just trying to lighten the mood...)

I think that's the shutter fluid.

Did you happen to have an ink pen somewhere else in your bag? For the life of me I can't figure out what type of liquid would even be in the camera in the first place, especially around that location. Maybe you can ask Canon if they perform exorcisms.

When I bought my 30d it was a few months before I got it out into nature for shots that would have any depth to them (f/16-f/22) only to get it home to find out my sensor was full of lube from the shutter mechanism.

I'm beginning to wonder about Canon's quality and the 7D. When people get them in their hand they absolutely fall in love with it but this is the third separate incident of something going wrong that I've heard of. All 3 involve something completely different from the other.

That's so strange, maybe the 7D has blue blood! :p

To be honest I've never seen any new camera release not have teething problems, plus theres a LOT of new 7D's being sold at the moment.

All 7D's come from the factory with a Smurf installed, unfortunately yours died.

Seriously though, that's really wierd. What does is smell like? Maybe there was an accident with Loctite at the factory with this body.

I won't disagree with that but it doesn't make it right. For a lot of people right now a dslr is quite an investment. I started with the 300d and no problems, I got a 40D from a nice college student for only $200 because just out of warranty in went ERR99 on him (the shutter had to be replaced). I own a ton of Canon gear from L's to scanners and printers and love them all but if the quality slips...

I'm not saying it's acceptable, I'm just saying it's not an isolated case.

wow there is more to this story....I don't know if i should be embarrassed or pissed off. i just now thought of this...

My camera bag was sitting underneath my printer (with the top open because i recently bought the qbox and was messing with my flash and stand and putting it all together). the same day i bought ink for my printer and my gf replaced the ink cartridges the next day while i was at work. when i got home after work i found a bunch of paper towels with the same color (CYAN!!) soaked into them....i can't believe i didn't connect the dots quicker! when i asked her what the heck she did to the printer to have all the ink leak out of the cyan cartridge she blurted "don't ask"...so i didn't.

so like i said i don't know if i should be mad at my gf or embarrassed i made this post lol. i don't think canon puts cyan ink inside the 7d or any of their cameras! lol it's all an impressive and funny situation at the same time now.

i'm still dabbing the button and stuff is still coming out, but only very little at a time. what i don't get is how the rest of the camera didn't stuff all over it, or any on my bag. it's just on that one button. the camera will still go to cannon for a thorough cleaning.

things learned from this post:

don't put camera bag under printer
don't leave camera bag open or you might get ink spilled on it.
canon doesn't put smurfs in their cameras
7d can take a little ink spill and work just fine....

wow i was freaked out for a moment.

btw i called canon earlier and received great customer service. they sent me an email with instructions on how to mail the camera in for their techs to take a look. will have to call them back to confirm if an ink spill is covered under warranty lol
