So another home game came to the mens high school team I regularly shoot for and I had a chance to set up my new backboard remote. The backboard in this gym is interesting because it gave me plently of places to mount but not alot of places for placement. Anyway the set up + results.

Very interesting. What did you think about the glare? Any thoughts on how to reduce it?

The results are very good IMO. Im sure you will tweak it some and Im interested to see that.

MY only concern is I dont see a safety cable. Looks like you were using the strap to help with that? Maybe you had a cable and I dont see it but that is a must IMO.

I had two safety cables ready, but time ran short and the problem was that the gym didnt open until an hour a head of time. so I had to rush things a bit... so i did not had a chance to run the cable.

The glare could very well be reduced by me shooting from the other side. which I will try and do it on the next home game (Tuesday). So we can see what that looks like..I will most likely mount higher and tilted a bit more. Or putting another gobo on the top side of things..

If anyone has any suggestions on safety cables Id like to see some placements or such... how do you guys to it on the camera itself?

You DO have liability insurance for this right? Be amazed if they let you set it up without!

Reflection/glare are annoying, just take some tweaking to find what works. Did ya use the SS article on set up and everything for this? Looks familiar to that. Also agree, safety cables are a must - one thing breaks and that comes tumbling down you're screwed.

yup I have liability Insurance. they didnt check however. It is pretty similar to the SS article but not really the same. I had to do some tweaking to it. Like i said i have safety cables just because of time restraints didnt get them up.

Amazing ain't it? Think they'd want to protect their six.

I have to find that article, well for next season - I'm done with bball this year.

no kidding.. I mean typically they dont open the gym until an hour and a half before game time, and they typically shoot baskets during the warm up time. I had the ladder set up- about 5 minutes until I could be done, and with the cables ready to go but the visiting coach came over and said that I was in their way for warm ups and that I needed to move. I was at the baseline about a foot behind the basket.. so i dunno.. it irked me a bit lol.

Yesterday they opened the gym right after school was over but I didnt know that so I arrived at my normal time.. URGH.

Here is that article.

my set up is as followed..

Camera with a transmitter set to channel 1, and a receiver plugged into the remote port set to channel 3.

Handheld camera has a transmitter set to channel 1.

Receivers on lights set to channel 1.

Handheld transmitter set to channel 3.

I am not positive on the distance but I had them do a few jump shots/layups so I could get the distance right. typically right around the yellow line does alright. i drop it about halfway up from there.

Thanks, sure I see now you dont want remote camera firing when you are down at half court or when using your hand held camera.. only when the action gets to the remote camera side foul line. this is when you are triggering the back board remote camera I see.
I need to get that magic arm (I see you are using two of them). then try to get the AD at the school to let me set it up..
Thanks again,
Joe

This isnt just so i can make this easier on me. I would rather try different angles, get different results. Its about seeing better to shoot better (Thanks sportsshooter).

Make sure that if you do set it up that you have liability insurance. Everything I have posted so far is what you need to keep in mind. Read the sportsshooter article I posted earlier, it will help you out.

As for the glare issue, you could even use some Cinefoil/black wrap (think of it like a very thick aluminum foil that is matte black, really great stuff for all sorts of uses) and some G tape to create a glare shield around your lens. Then you could shoot either side with no glare. It would take a bit of time to set up and I know you were hurried in this case. The Cinefoil is pretty easy stuff to use and it's a very quick fix. It would have been a lot better looking and more effective than whatever that was you used on the bottom half of the lens.
But over all you did well and learned a crap load too. What lens did you choose for that spot?

Here's a couple of links to different products that could be used as a light shield for the lens.

This Barbizon Lighting company has all sorts of stuff that would make things easier. It's a great resource. It's not the cheapest, because the service thefilm and TV production world mostly, but they have the right stuff.

Chas,

I would pretty much be making another gobo out of that stuff. I might want something more stable than the foil. I also thought about some dark cloth..to drape but I am not sure yet.

Here was my set up including safety cables. Obviously, you have to adapt to your situation. BTW, it took me 3 hours to set this up--It was my first time. It is nerve wracking to wait to see if you set it up right or if all your work has a fatal flaw. I think you did a great job and I love your pics. The only suggestion for next time is to try to keep your flashes behind the camera. One other thing. My shots were for a slam dunk competition so framing the action was easier than trying to capture game action.

The Camera. ID Mark III plus the 24-105 mm lens at 24mm. Focus was pre-set at 42 inches. Gaffer tape to prevent any changing of the settings. Links to attach the safety cables.

The lights. Three Alien Bee B800s bounced off the ceiling. Triggered by PWs.

Safety cables

The mounting. Note the safety cables running to the brace on the top of the board. Two clamps, two arms, two safety cables.
