Does anyone have any experience with this particular modifier? I've attached the link for it:

http://www.amvona.com …ct_id=3758&category_id=73 (external link)

I've got two shoots coming up in a few months and I'm looking at the possibility of using this on a Genesis 400 as a main light for groups of up to 8 or 9 people and then having two Genesis 200's dedicated to a seamless white background. I've read and watched everything on zarias.com and the Pro Photo Life tutorials but just wanted to know if anyone had experience with this particular modifier. Thanks in advance.

I have the big Softlighter II and I think the big PLM from Buff is better. Its 86" and deliver very nice light without the defusion panel in front or if you want it softer use the panel.
The only risk is that they are currently on back order.
There is a fairly comprehensive review on Rob Galbreight's (sp?) site.

I use the mid-sized one for groups of up to about 6. The white version with the spill kill panel is a nice even soft fill light.

I have one that came with a Continous light. That thing is so huge at 7 feet I could not use it in my home studio, my ceiling is only 8 feet.. so it just sits in a corner now. But then I bought it cheap when Amvona was on ebay.. I think I paid $100 for the whole package with includes the 7' Octabox, Continous Light Speedring and 3 Halogen Bulbs of 500W each. If I knew better then, I would have got the 3' or 5' one..

OK, so gigantic octabox of doom is out. I'm thinking of just doing the x-large softbox instead but I'm not sure if it's enough to light a whole group of up to 8 or 9 people.

I have the 5ft Octo from Amvona and I love it. The 7' would be huge. I have one of the 4x6 softboxes and it is gigantic.

Octoboxes produce...

Octoboxes produce very soft lighting/ The one thing that I have against octoboxes and also umbrellas (either reflective or shoot through) is the shape of the catchlights in the subject's eyes.

Natural light from a window produces a rectangular shaped catchlight and I think that it looks more natural than an octogonal catchlight.

send it my way then! Shame to just have it sitting there. I have 10 ft ceilings. Only real problem with that modifier is it doesn't break down like a rotalux. It's always there!

I wish they were still on eBay I bought quite a bit of stuff from them on eBay, but their prices now are a little high for their gear.

I would also look at OEC Camera on eBay, they sell Visco boxes and the reviews I read are very positive. I bought a few and really like the quality.

The only time I set it up in the house, my wife gave a dirty look like what is this? So I quickly packed-it up. May be one day I will try using it outside, just to see the light quality.

Yes. Some of my lighting equipments were purchased from Amvona on ebay.. You will surely like the quality of modifiers from OEC Camera on ebay.. I bought a 47" Octabox with Bowens mount from them and it's real good.. I have also seen good reviews about them in the forums here.

You better have a few cars to tie it down to; that thing could sail a small boat.

I have the 5' version and have been very happy with it ... lot's of inserts (gold, silver and white). Having the 7' would be nice for full body shots and group shots. Keep in mind that it will be heavy and many brackets will not support it unless they have "teeth" ... make sense.

Good luck
