Finally got round to finishing the mk3 grip extender for my 7D, quite pleased with the result, nice and comfy without the bulk of the battery grip. I will still get a battery grip at some point for shooting portrait, but for everyday use this gives me what I needed. I made the decals on my pc at home, not sure if they are staying on yet lol..

Sorry for the poor pics, I had to borrow a really old camera I gave my little brother years ago to get pics fitted to the body and boy does it give some colour noise, so i went b&w to tidy them up a bit...

That's pretty nice. I take it that's in lieu of the battery grip? If so, I think it's a pretty elegant solution. Do you have access to the battery?

lol, yeah its made from a piece of wood :) I would have bought a nice magnesium one or even moulded plastic if such a thing existed.

No I have to remove it to change a battery, but I used a tripod head QR plate to mount, so its takes a few seconds to mount/dismount and I dont need to change batteries very often anyway.

Its so light, but gives a superb bit of extra finger room and a nice balance in the palm of my hand. I have allways wished that slr and now dslr bodies came with a bit you removed to make use of a battery grip, especially now dslr's are getting quite heavy, but I guess canon etc marketing depts like selling battery grips to people with normal or larger sized hands who just need a better grip area. :)

Any shots of how it connects? Just a bit curious as to which QR system you used and how you got it all in there.

I'll' take a couple when i get a minute, but its very simple, its just the QR plate recessed into the top of the grip, screwed down with a hole through the base to turn the screw, so its just like attaching a qr plate to the body. I made the grip with a recessed lip all the way around to make it extra secure so it cant twist. There is a sheet of soft rubber between the grip and camera to make it extra snug :)

Version one had no recess and even with non slip foam it was possible to twist it, just like a qr plate can. Version 2 had a small lip to fit the contour of the camera at one end, but I thought that was a bit ugly, I think I have nailed it with the mk3 lol :)
