I tried to set my 7D up with back button A/F last night. I followed the instructions on page 218-220 in the manual but didn't get it right? The shutter button would meter, but none of the back buttons would auto focus. Obviously, I am missing a stepor something? Is there any way you could simplify the process for me? I'd like to try it. Thanks in advance, Pete.

Please disregard the above comment by me, I got it now. I'm looking forward to trying it out at the next game. Peter

I think the pics look very good. Some of the best ambient light bball pics I've seen posted. I think the 85 1.8 just made my wish list....

Thanks Michael. And for those of us who don't have the luxury of putting strobes all over a gym, the 85mm f/1.8 is the next best alternative. Pretty sure all the shots I posed were ISO 2500, f/2.0 and 1/640 on the shutter. Seems to work for me!

The 85 1.8 is among Canon's best 'bang-for-the-buck' lenses, that's for sure!

Dave, just curious. Have you tried your 135L since you began using expanded focus mode?

I've used it during pregame and halftime to get 'portrait-like' shots of the players or cheerleaders kind of standing around, gotten some crowd shots with it, but no real basketball action to speak of.

In terms of focal length, it's kind of a 'tweener' ... too long for anything close and not far enough to reach the other side of the court.

A couple of examples of the 135mm and fairly static shots taken during pre-game:

Player during warmup:

Cheerleader waiting on the team to come out for game:

Definitely a beautiful lens and I try to give it its due during games, but indoors in crappy light doesn't really do it justice! Could be me, though! :)
