Will my camera work the way I intend for fill flash if I do this... set the camera to AV, and set exposure compensation to -1. Then set the flash compensation on my 580EXII to +1 and high speed sync. Will that give me a neutral exposure? The reason I want to do this is to keep backgrounds from being so blown out when using fill flash outdoors.

That is a good starting point.
Remember that as the shutter speed goes up the flash has to be closer to the subject to be effective.

There is a page on my tutorial site that explains how I use HSS and exposure compensation to accomplish what you are after.

Thanks! Both great sources! I generally understand balancing flash with ambient. I was just wondering if I could do it easily with TTL. I've often done it with off-camera light, using a meter. Obviously that takes a lot longer to setup and doesn't work for candids.
