I really like the Markins M10 so my admittedly ignorant question is...does this head fit well with the 3531s?

3xxx series Gitzos are better matched in size to M20 head's base

Yup.

M10 on a 3 series will work though. I have the same combo:

Thanks, Wilt. By better matched, do you mean in terms of function/performance, or more aesthetics?

This is very helpful. Thank you. Why what factors helped you choose the M10 over the M20?

The stability of the tripod with lenses of a certain FL, is matched to the stability of the head with lenses of a certain FL. One is not excelled by the other.
Aethetics in terms of the sense of proportion of the combination is a bit better too, as it does not look like heavy bottom with miniscule head.

The Markins M10 and M20 have very similar load/torque ratings (90 lbs/175 lbf-in and 100 lbs/190 lbf-in, respectively). Wouldn't the majority of lens/body combinations be handled equally well by either one?

I guess the thing I'm having a difficult time understanding is how would the M10 would be excelled by the 3531, but the M20 would not be?

My understanding is that the lens FL 'limit' is that the M10 is up to about 300mm or so, while the M20 is longer than that, per Markins.

The M20 "fits better", since it's a bit wider. (There's an image of one further in the thrad I linked)

I bought the M10, since the longest lens I have is a 80-200L with 1.4TC and figured that if I ever buy another tripod, it's most likely a series 2. (Got this Gitzo from a colleague)
So I bought the ballhead with that in mind. It fits the 1325 well enough and fits a 2 series better then an M20 would.

For longer lenses then 300mm, IMO it's time to use a Wimberly ;)
