Hi everyone,

Would just like a bit of CC on some shots, not so much on the content, but exposure. Trying to get good results shooting JPEG.

Anyway here they are.

1st shot straight from camera no post.

2nd slight levels adjustment only.

3rd slight levels only, slight saturation

4th straight from camera

1st 2 shots were shot on the first day of competition with reasonably good weather. 3rd and 4th were shot on 2nd day very poor conditions rained all day.
Anyway some feedback would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Daniel

Ok, this is how I see them.

1st and 2nd pretty spot on?

3rd a little over exposed and the cloudy white balance setting has warmed it up a little too much, when the sun poked through.

4th a little over exposed.

What do you think?

Daniel

The subjects are all pretty well exposed, with some of them having hot backgrounds. #3 has distortion and also needs a white balance adjustment. I'm assuming there wasn't a great focal length on this one. (I can't see exif data) It would be nice if ALL horses at shows were grey, wouldn't it? ;)

Thanks for your feedback bayberry,

Yep grey horses would be nice, it can get a bit tricky.

Backgrounds were pretty ordinary and the weather made it worse could only shoot from one side of the competition area on the second day without getting the lense covered in water droplets from the rain.

Cheers
Daniel

The hardest part I have with this sort of thing is the white Participant Numbers, white saddle blankets, white breaches. I'm never clear on how to expose for that sort of thing.

I think #2 and #4 are the best exposures. But very good overall!!

I know what you mean about the whites. I shoot RAW most of the time and just underexpose a bit (keeping details in the white then fixing in DPP or photoshop) but recently I have been shooting events for an events company and they need me to shoot jpeg for instant viewing by competitors.
I have just been exposing for the riders face and the horse not worrying about losing details in the white numbers etc. But I'm still a bit of all over the place, hence the post, its always good to get some CC to improve.
Must be doing something right though, keep getting asked to shoot.

Cheers
Daniel

Exactly the way to do it. If you get a correct exposure on the rider's face, which is the way to do it, you have to have blown highlights. This is especially true if you have a very sunny, contrasty day and there is shadow under the rider's cap. You then have to shift the exposure to the right a stop or more and you really will have blown highlights. There is no way around it.

You did a great job on these exposures.

Thanks,

I'm really trying to get my pics as good as possible so I can confidently get out there and start shooting some events for myself rather than shooting for other photogs. Still got a bit to go though.

Cheers

That's a great idea. I hadn't thought of that before. I'll remember that, for sure!
