We had planned to go to Yellowstone again this weekend. Then, at the last minute – I cancelled our reservations. We decided to head north in search of Snowy Owls. I’m no expert on these owls, but I have to say I can count all that I Have seen in my lifetime on one hand (and I get out quite a bit).

So, you can imagine how comical it is to actually decide to go looking for one. We decided to head towards Kalispell and see if we could see anything. At the last minute this morning, we went a completely different direction. Somewhere we have never been..

You can imagine our surprise when on a snowy back road, this lovely bird sat on a fence post right off the side of the road!

Cool birds. I remember when I was realllly my dad hit one with his truck in the middle of the night and brought it home to try to give it a chance to fight for it's life. Spent one night in the garage in a little nest we made but it didn't make it. But I remember it being such a neat bird. Looks like this one has some blood on it's leg feathers near the talons? Or am I seeing things?

Oh right, of course...nice shot, too!!

Another great shot! How are you liking the 1D IV compared to the III? Are there any singular improvements that make the upgrade worthwhile?

How come you're using 1/8000 of a second shutter with ISO 400? It's a great pose and good lighting, but the image is a bit noisy... Surely 1/800 would have been enough to freeze a stationary bird and have less noise at a lower ISO. Just my $0.02.
