I would say T1i is the cheapest. Might be worth looking into a standalone like a FLIP if cost is the main concern.

nikon D5000 probably as of right now however the T1i's price should drop a bit aswell now with the T2i released last week

D5000 - $524.95
http://www.adorama.com …ml?searchinfo=nikon+d5000 (external link)

T1i - $799.99
http://www.adorama.com …html?searchinfo=canon+T1i (external link)

both camera's are very capable, however keep in mind that with both of these you will not have manual control over shutter speed or aperture, or ISO, with the T2i that is coming out you will however it will be a bit more expensive then either of these. Both the D5000 and T1i are very similar spec's-wise, I suggest you go to a Best Buy around you to feel each before you buy, as in this price and feature range it really depends lenses and how it feels in your hands.

good luck!

Nikon's video isn't anything worth investing in. If you want a HDSLR... stick to Canon

For Cameras/Kits up to $1000 US (current B&H "add to cart" prices):

Pentax K-X (720P) - $469.95 with 18-55 lens
Nikon D5000 (720P) - $549.95 body only, $639.95 with 18-55 VR lens
Canon T1i (1080P) - $649.95 body only, $749.95 with 18-55 IS lens
Nikon D90 (720P) - $779.95 body only,
Canon T2i (1080P) - $799.95 body only, $899.95 with 18-55 IS

It's weird that B&H has the Pentax K-X kit with 18-55 for $469.95 but are selling the "body only" for $579.95.

Not really .. when I bought my 30D some years back I saved money by getting it with the 18-55 kit lens. It was $100 cheaper than the body only .. something to do with overstocking and Canon subsidizing the dealer at the time.

I should have said Canonite (Canaanite) instead. (a little biblical humor) :p

If you want ease of use and full features, you should probably consider a camcorder because DSLR video still has limitations.

If video is the main concern, a quality camcorder can be had for significantly less unless you look at the Pentax.

Not meaning to downplay the video capability of still cameras at this point, but ergonomically speaking the camcorder would be easier to use in the long run if you don't require using different lenses, they also have as much manual control as the best video DSLRs right now.
