I took a photography class last year and I was thinking that my instructor told our class that there are certain kinds of lenses that have to be used on full frame cameras, such as the 5D... I could be wrong though when I think I heard this.

I currently have a 30D with a 50mm1.4 lens and a 28-135 and have been offered a 5D at a very reasonable price but I'm wondering if both of my lenses will work on the full frame.

I am also wanting to buy a wide angle lens and had rented a Tokina 12-24 for my 30D which I absolutely loved, but it seems that is one of the lenses that won't "work" with the 5D.

Am I wrong in thinking that some lenses won't work on the 5D?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Both of your current lenses will work with a 5D.

EF-S lenses will not work with the 5D.

So can someone tell me what wide angle lenses I could purchase that are more on the inexpensive side. As I mentioned before, I was wanting a 12-24 Tokina but this would be much wider on the 5D. Would the Tokina even work on the 5D? Another one I was considering with my 30D was the Sigma 10-20.

Sorry for so many ?'s.

Sigma 12-24
Canon 17-40
Canon 16-35
Canon 24-105
Canon 24-70
Canon 28-70
Sigma 24-70
Sigma 24-60

These will work without vignetting. Other wide angle/ultra wide angles may mount to the 5D but will vignette.

Canon 17-35mm 2.8L and 20-35mm 2.8L are older but useful and often can be found at lower prices.

I believe all Sigma DC lenses won't work on full frame cameras. Well they would mount but you would only get an image circle :S

Don't forget that your EF 28-135mm lens will become much wider on a 5D than it was on the 30D. For full frame, that lens is already classified as a wide angle zoom. Anything wider would be considered an ultra-wide angle zoom lens.

To be honest, the lenses you have are just perfect for transition to full frame. They are far better suited for the 5D than they were on a 30D. If you have a good deal on a 5D, by all means jump on it.

The tokina will work, but you'll have a small range of use. Better off buying the 17-40L used for cheap!

Correct, DC lenses will mount but leave heavy vignetting. I don't believe they will contact the mirror assembly like an EF-S lens will and cause damage. The Sigma DG model line will fit FF bodies without issue.

I'm not sure how Tamron or Tokina label their lenses to distinguish if a lens is FF compatible.

Tamron uses Dii for crop lenses, and Tokina uses DX.

Okay so:

Canon:
EF=FF compatible
EF-S= crop only (contacts mirror assembly and will cause physical damage)

Sigma
DG=full frame
DC=crop (causes heavy vignetting)

Tamron
Di= FF compatible
Di II= crop

Tokina
DX=crop

Will the Di II or DX contact the mirror and cause damage or do they just have vignetting due to reduce image circle?

I'm pretty sure those will physcially mount fine, but will have severe vignetting. Canon is the only manufacturer that uses a physically different mount for the crop vs. full-frame formats.

I got my Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 for a little bit of nothing. I don't feel like it's a permanent solution, but it's sharp enough and wide enough (good lord is 17 wide on FF!) to take my mind off the wide end so I can worry about some other things.
