It is doable. I am small handicapped person and I can do it for a while. For BIFs I prefer HH, for bird on a stick shots, wimbreley is nice. For shooting shorebirds etc, I prefer skimmer.

You'll find most aviation photographers who use the 500 will shoot it hand held.

Tripods are too cumbersome and monopods are too one-dimensional (even with a ball head...)

I use it handheld but I am quite a big guy. If I am handholding I find it easier if the hood is reversed. I often use it on a monopod and rarely on a tripod apart from hide work.

Hand holding is definitely my preference though. Only reason I use a monopod is that Scotland has crap light so I need some support for shots at 1/200th etc.

Yes. Cannot remember last time I used a monopod. Don't think it has ever been on a tripod.

I use mine hand held most of the time. Never on a monopod (for reasons listed earlier in the thread) and occasionally on a tripod with a Wimberley gimbal. Birds are typically hand held ... mammal critters are on the tripod when possible.

I handhold mine. Tripods get in the way.
