Today, while driving home from my in-laws, I thought I'd stop an take a picture of a dairy cow.

As Louis Pasteur said, "Chance favors the prepared mind," and this turned out to be true.
As I pulled up to the meadow and walked to the fence, I noticed something sticking out of the back of the cow. I was on the phone with my wife and said, "Oh crap. There's a baby coming out. Gotta go!" Turns out (after later reading Wikipedia) that calves are born front feet first, followed by the head, and then followed by the chest, hips, and back legs. The cow went through about five major pushing stages, and showed pain in her eyes, but never made a sound (at least not that I could hear from about thirty feet away).

So, after about fifteen more minutes the calf's front feet and head were out.

After a lot of pushing, she finally pushed out her newborn.

And eventually the bonding begins.
