I have a 5D classic on it way..and..in anticipation I ordered a San Disk Compact Flash Card, however, i may have clicked on the wrong one, I recieved a SanDisk Extreme III Compact Flash Card, will this work in the 5D?

If not will it work in my 40D?

Yes: Compact Flash (CF) cards are the only type that fit a 5D and 5D MKII. The variations of compact flash cards are simply the speed at which they can be written by the camera's system, and the speed that they can transfer from card to computer.
Your 5D is writing large files if you are shooting RAW, so prepare to have more cards than you originally anticipated.

Extreme III are fine.

It'll work fine but I don't notice any speed difference with the 4gb extreme III and a lexar platinum ii 80x card.

You'll find your 40D using the extreme III better than your 5D. 5D's technology is older and extreme III is overkill for it.

so what??? What is the value of your comment. Most cars go much faster than the speed limits alllow but it doesn't stop people buying them! How will the OP know that they aren't getting full potential from the card. Maybe in a years time the OP will upgrade the body and see the benefits.
The OP will see their files transfer to the computer at a reasonable rate and that matters most.

Maybe you need to grow up and learn to rationalise before you express yourself. And maybe you're patient and courteous enough to leave all maybe's and assumptions to the OP to make.

Not sure what seemed to make you angry. He was just pointing out that the slow write speeds of the 5d dont require a card that fast. Play nice
