I've noticed recently that my 580EX v1 doesn't fire reliably. If it's fully charged and it's been a couple of seconds since its last flash it'll usually fire, but during rapid triggering even on 1/128th power with a battery pack it will only fire 20% of the time. Even when the red light is lit it doesn't always fire, and sometimes it'll fire when the light's green.

It doesn't matter if i'm in manual with a skyport or in ETTL with the flash on the camera. Changing the batteries made no difference, nor did a battery pack. The flash has had a hard life, it's probably a veteran of 80 weddings, but my 550EX is older and still works fine. I have three flashes so it's not a major problem if one's out.

Has anyone seen this problem before? Is there any solution other than a trip to Canon? I've already given Canon service $1100 this month so i'd rather not send them more equipment!

Edit - stroboscopic flash is stopping after five or six 1/128th power flashes, even though the red light is still on. Turning on CF 8-1 "Continuous Shooting with Quick Flashing" I think helped slightly but not hugely, same problem. Now if I hit the test button on my skyport even second or so I get an 80% flash rate, whereas the 580 II is 100% without a battery pack.

Hi Tim, did you fix the problem? We had this problem a few months back. Sent it to Canon under warranty and they fixed it right away. They said it was a capacitor leak.

They didn't say what was wrong, but it works fine now.
