Here's the page from CR...http://www.canonrumors.com …55-f2-is-patent/#comments (external link)

I doubt this will happen and the price would double what the original is now I think. There's a lot of doubt after reading all the comments. What's your take?

That would be interesting...

Probably not though. If there's an f/2 zoom coming out, I would think that it would have a more limited zoom range. And possibly, be a telephoto because I think that would be easier to build than a wide-short tele zoom.

If Canon is to update the 17-55, I'd rather see an increase in the focal length range while keeping the same f/2.8 max aperture. Something like a 15-55 or 15-60 2.8 would be nice, with improved optics and build, and latest gen IS. That said, a 17-55 f/2 would be very interesting, though probably significantly larger, heavier, and more costly than the current 17-55 2.8.

I don't think we would see it on a EF-S lens.

Seeing as f/2.8 is the largest aperture for a zoom of any focal length or brand, I'd be surprised, if Canon were to develop a f/2 zoom, that the EF-S range is where they'd launch it. Would probably kick off with an L-series one instead, and, once that one has been refined, the technology will trickle down to company's standard EF and EF-S lenses.

I think if Canon were to make a F/2 zoom, the EF-S format would be a prime candidate. A f/2 zoom in an EF body especially if it also had IS would put the brick to shame. It would be a huge lens, but the smaller glass requirements for the EF-S form might make the lens about the size and weight of the current brick. I doubt Canon is working on it, there are so many other EF-S lenses that make more sense like a EF-S 100-500 smaller and lighter than the current 100-400 EF, but it sure would be interesting.

You think EF-S, I think EF L, both of us think it's unlikely to happen in the near future either way :)

I don't think many full-framers would be too pleased, either, if Canon decided not to make a f/2 version of the brick just because it would be bigger and heavier.

Yea, I think it's unlikely as there are too many other gaps in the EF-S lineup.

If there is ever a FF EF 17-55 2.8. I'm pretty sure it would be very expensive and huge already. may be about $1500-$2000?

I just can't imagine EF 17-55 2.0. But ef-s may be feasible. But may be $2000+, or may be even $3000+.

I believe it is only for the 4/3s size format, even smaller than the 1.6 crop Canon supports.

Haha, the granite slab

Maybe they'll make it out of the same "high quality plastic" as the recent macro L, and implement the first "high quality plastic" elements to lighten up the whole package :-D

the current 17-55IS is already pretty big (looks huge on a rebel). if this one ever comes out it's gonna look so funny on a rebel!!!

wow... if canon can make this lens for less than $2k, a SOOO many people would ditch their current system and jump on a 7D. if canon does make this it'll be the ultimate zoom.
