IIRC, the MKII has faster AF and marginally improved optics.

The II has better flare control and micro-contrast, because of it's coating. It's also about twice as fast at focusing than the I version, although, even that is still woefully slow compared to normal lenses.

Other than that, most would say they are pretty much identical when it comes to image quality. So, if price is an issue, the I version should be a good option if you need a specialty lenses such as this.

"Need" not at the moment , "want" yes. I found a really good deal on one (MK I) in LA last week. ~thinking about it~, next time I'm there, maybe I'll get it. Its priced out just right IMO.

pretty good price. But if you wait you might be able to snag one for 1,050-1100.

I have the I and never considered the II. The price difference was not worth the "upgrade". They both focus slow and both produce unbelievable results. For $1,200 I'd get it and if the urge stikes to get the II, you won't be out any money. Just make sure it's in good condition.

I have the original 85L and have no reason to upgrade. I bought it used for around $1000 (part of it was a trade). Sure the AF speed would be nice, but I can't justify the cost on that (I shoot weddings). The funny thing is I really like the lens flare on the original 85L, in the correct backlit situation in bleeds light into the frame in a way that I find perfect for weddings.
